Some people just want to watch the world burn...

No place in the NFL for cheerleaders in 2018

Quote:
The Houston Texans aren’t even bothering with the pretense.

On their website is a photo gallery of the finalists from last weekend’s cheerleader tryouts, and visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorites. Are these action shots of the women that highlight their athletic ability or dance skills? Do they include a list of their qualifications?

Of course not. They’re headshots. Sorry, head and chest shots. Close-up ones, at that.

The better to ogle, you know.

Cheerleaders from two NFL teams have filed gender discrimination complaints in the past month, detailing the demeaning ways in which they were treated. Restrictions on what they can and can’t post on social media. Rules that prohibit contact with players, and put the onus on the women to avoid it. Dress codes.

Is it any wonder? The underlying premise of NFL cheerleaders is degrading, presenting women as nothing more than objects to be leered at. With skimpy, suggestive outfits as their “uniform,” their only purpose is to titillate.

It’s always been an appalling message to send and, in this #MeToo era, there’s no longer any place for it. NFL cheerleaders need to go. NBA dance squads and NHL ice girls while we’re at it, too.

This is not a criticism of cheerleading overall. In some forms, it very much is an athletic endeavor, a hybrid of acrobatics and gymnastics. The International Olympic Committee has even recognized cheerleading as a sport and it could some day make an appearance in the Games.

Proponents will say that most women who are NFL cheerleaders are professionally trained dancers who just want the opportunity to do what they love. That they play an important role in maintaining the team’s positive image with promotional appearances and community service.

All of which is true.

“I was always out in the community,” said Kristan Ann Ware, a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader who has filed a complaint with the Florida Commission on Human Relations alleging that she was discriminated against for talking about her faith and bullied after saying she was a virgin.

“If you take away the cheerleaders, you take away the glue. You take away the puzzle piece that brings football to life.”

But that isn’t the real reason 26 of the 32 NFL teams have cheerleaders, and everybody knows it. They’re there to be eye candy, blow-up dolls come to life.
Nothing says "Woman Power!" more than a snob who tells women they're victims but they're just too darn stupid to know it...

Personally I think we should keep the cheerleaders and get rid of the players.

Personally I vote for stripper poles on the sidelines.

As I recall cheerleading jobs are awarded after fierce competition with far more applicants than job openings. Why, it's the same process with different criteria NFL teams use.

Indeed potential draftees are invited to so-called combines where they are put through a regime of examinations, measurements and tests exceeding that of thoroughbred horses but just as "degrading." Then there are personal interviews probing candidates grasp of the game, willingness to be coached and locker room presence. Candidates are routinely downgraded or dismissed from consideration for physical attributes, too short, weight, length of arms, etc. But when an similar examination process is applied to selecting cheerleaders it's treating them like blow up dolls.

We are lectured that we ought to ignore players denigrating the flag and country for social justice. Instead, we are instructed to look only at their performance on the field. Yet if we treat the cheerleaders the same way, it's degrading.

My grand daughter was a cheerleader at Va Tech. Out of hundreds of applications, 4 freshman made the cut. Practice and other obligations run about 15-20 hours/week. And grades must be maintained.

Only the best of the best become cheerleaders.

On a serious note, shouldn't whether or not cheerleading is demeaning toward women be up to the women? No one forces 'em to do it. It's voluntary.

Same as bein' a stripper. Whether or not it's demeaning to women is a matter of personal opinion. If chicks wanna take their clothes off for money it's their prerogative.

So sick and tired of peeps tryin' to be the moral compass of other peeps. As long as it's legal and no one is bein' forced into it, why give a fuq?

We are told that women have unfettered dominion over their own bodies in all decisions in the area of abortion yet when women decide they want to use their bodies to become cheerleaders it's exploitation.

Most women aren't capable of thinking for themselves, even when they vote they just punch the button for whoever their husband tells them to. Always a Republican. So other more enlightened women must do the thinking for them.
