Sound Off: Should the USO Ban Kathy Griffin?
May 31, 2017 - Kathy Griffin had her picture taken with a fake severed head that looks like the president. The stunt will likely end her career.
Quote:
Kathy Griffin has been a supporter of the USO, participating in tours and hosting “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” in 2010. Now VFW National Commander Brian Duffy has called for the USO to renounce Griffin: “The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. strongly condemns comedian Kathy Griffin’s incredibly revolting attack on the President of the United States. Her apology is not accepted. What she did was not humorous nor should it be protected speech or expression. Playing to an audience with a severed head is what our enemies do. The USO should immediately end its relationship with her.” The USO wants everyone to know that “Kathy Griffin had two USO experiences years ago. The USO has no relationship with Kathy Griffin.”

UPDATE, 6/2/17: The VFW has apologized for mentioning the USO in its May 31 press release that condemned Kathy Griffin.

Early Tuesday afternoon, TMZ published a photographer Tyler Shields’ disturbing photo of actress/TV host/loudmouth Kathy Griffin holding a fake severed head designed to look like President Donald Trump. Apparently, no one in the Shields/Griffin bubble understood just how offensive beheading imagery can be. They’ve been blasted from all sides: some of the president’s biggest critics blasted the pair every bit as ferociously as have his supporters. By 8pm Tuesday night, Griffin realized just how badly she had screwed up and made an apology video: “I am sorry. I went too far. I was wrong.” She was so desperate to get the word out that she went on camera without her usual hair and makeup glam squad doing any prep work.

President Trump weighed in on Wednesday morning:

Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself. My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 31, 2017

Holy Caskets! - Batman's dead...

Batman, Family Guy actor Adam West dead at 88 after battle with leukemia
Sunday 11th June, 2017 - Actor Adam West, who played Batman in the 1960s television series, has passed away at the age of 88 after a “short but brave” battle with leukemia, according to a statement from his family.
Quote:
Born in 1928 as William West Anderson in Walla Walla, Washington, West decided to pursue stardom from an early age. His mother, Audrey Speer, was an opera singer and concert pianist, but abandoned her Hollywood dreams to care for her children. After he graduated from Whitman College with a literature degree, he was drafted into the Army, where he worked as an announcer on American Forces Network television. After his discharge, West worked for a stint on the Hawaii children’s program El Kini Popo Show, then moved to Hollywood in 1959 and changed his name. He liked the way Adam looked and sounded with his middle name, he wrote in his autobiography, so he combined the two to become Adam West.

In the ’60s, West appeared in films such as Geronimo, The Outlaws Is Coming and Robinson Crusoe on Mars. He rocketed to stardom with a lead role in ABC’s Batman and will be remembered for his campy, slapstick portrayal of the Caped Crusader on a show that frequently edged into satire. “He was bright, witty and fun to work with,” Julie Newmar, who played Catwoman to West’s Batman, said in a statement Saturday. “I will miss him in the physical world and savour him always in the world of imagination and creativity.” Though the network cancelled it after three seasons, NBC was set to pick up the rights for a fourth, but before they could begin production, someone destroyed the sets. The cost to rebuild them was too great, and the deal fell through.

October 1966: American actor Adam West with the actress Jill St John at the premiere of director John Huston's film, The Bible.

West was increasingly typecast and struggled to find work for a stretch after Batman, appearing in low-budget movies like Curse of the Moon Child through the 1970s. “You get terribly typecast playing a character like that,” he told The Associated Press in a 2014 interview. “But in the overall, I’m delighted because my character became iconic and has opened a lot of doors in other ways, too.” He was offered the role of James Bond in 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever, but turned it down because he believed the role should be played by a British actor.

He remained a pop culture icon, and reignited his career by lending his silky smooth voice to animated shows like The Fairly OddParents, The Simpsons and Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, and through appearances as himself on shows like The Big Bang Theory, The Drew Carey Show and 30 Rock. Most recently, he voiced the mayor of Quahog — named Adam West — in Family Guy. “Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement. West was married three times, and had six children. He had homes in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, but he and his wife, Marcelle, spent most of their time at their ranch near Sun Valley, Idaho.

Bill Cosby Rape Case Ends In Mistrial; D.A. Says “Will Retry” – Update

Quote:

A mistrial has been declared today in Bill Cosby’s criminal trial for the 2004 rape of Andrea Constand. The decision has for now spared the once-beloved actor from a potential decade behind bars, and comes at the end of over 50 hours of deliberation by the jury in Norristown, PA, which first went to Judge Steven O’Neill on June 15 to say it was deadlocked – at that time he told them to “try again,” which they’ve done for the past two days.

After just over an hour of deliberations on Saturday, the jurors informed the court that they were still “hopelessly deadlocked” on all the charges.*

Cosby mistrial doesn't preclude civil lawsuits...

Despite mistrial in criminal case, civil lawsuits await Cosby
Sat Jun 17, 2017 | Although Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial ended in a mistrial on Saturday, his legal problems persist as he faces assault and defamation claims in civil lawsuits, where the bar for evidence is lower than in criminal cases.
Quote:
In civil lawsuits in the United States, plaintiffs need only show that the weight of evidence is on their side, meaning they have information to tip the scales above 50 percent in their favor, as opposed to criminal cases in which prosecutors must prove claims beyond a reasonable doubt. At least 10 women have pending civil claims against Cosby in lawsuits filed in California and Massachusetts. Two have brought claims against the 79-year-old entertainer for sexual assault. Others, barred from doing so because their claims were too old, have brought defamation claims against him, saying he smeared their reputations by publicly denying their accusations.

The judge in the criminal case against Cosby in Pennsylvania declared a mistrial on Saturday after jurors said they were deadlocked and unable to reach a unanimous verdict on charges that Cosby sexually assaulted Andrea Constand in 2004. At the time, Constand worked at Cosby's alma mater, Temple University. David Harris, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law who specializes in criminal justice, said the hung jury did not mean that a civil jury would clear Cosby of liability. “There may not be enough evidence for a criminal conviction, but that does not rule out a civil verdict,” said Harris.

Actor and comedian Bill Cosby (C) reacts after a judge declared a mistrial in his sexual assault trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania

Approximately 60 accusations of sexual assault have been made against Cosby over a number of years, but only Constand's resulted in criminal charges because the other alleged incidents were too old to prosecute. Cosby has denied all of the accusations. Constand herself sued Cosby in 2005 and settled for an undisclosed sum.

Women bringing civil cases would also likely find it easier to introduce testimony from other accusers to support claims that Cosby engaged in a pattern of assault, said Douglas Wigdor, a plaintiffs' attorney who represents clients in sexual harassment cases. Little testimony about other accusations against Cosby was allowed in the Pennsylvania trial because of the strict standards for admitting evidence in criminal cases. Prosecutors had sought to have 13 other accusers testify in Constand's case, but the judge allowed only one, finding that more would unfairly prejudice the jury.

Sleep apnea among causes of Carrie Fisher’s death
Sun, Jun 18, 2017 - Actress Carrie Fisher died from sleep apnea and a combination of other factors, but investigators were not able to pinpoint an exact cause, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said on Friday.
Quote:
Among the factors that contributed to Fisher’s death was buildup of fatty tissue in the walls of her arteries, the agency said in a news release. The release says that the Star Wars actress showed signs of having taken multiple drugs, but investigators could not determine whether they contributed to her death in December last year. Her manner of death would be listed as undetermined, it said. Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person’s breathing pauses during sleep. The pauses might be brief or last several minutes, according to information from the US National Institutes of Health.

Fisher’s brother, Todd Fisher, said he was not surprised by the results, and added that his family did not want a coroner’s investigation of his sister’s death. “We’re not enlightened. There’s nothing about this that is enlightening,” he said. “I would tell you, from my perspective, that there’s certainly no news that Carrie did drugs,” Todd Fisher said, adding that his sister wrote extensively about her drug use, and that many of the drugs she took were prescribed by doctors to try to treat her mental health conditions.

Fisher long battled drug addiction and mental illness. She said she smoked pot at 13, used LSD by 21 and was diagnosed as bipolar at 24. She was treated with electroshock therapy and medication. “I am not shocked that part of her health was affected by drugs,” Todd Fisher said.

He said his sister’s heart condition was probably worsened by her smoking habit, as well as the medications she took. “If you want to know what killed her, it’s all of it,” he said. Todd Fisher said it was difficult to blame doctors who treated his sister because they were trying to help her. “They were doing their best to cure a mental disorder. Can you really blame them?” Todd Fisher said. “Without her drugs, maybe she would have left long ago.”

Charlie Sheen selling Babe Ruth's 1927 World Series ring

Quote:

Babe Ruth's 1927 World Series ring is up for auction on Lelands.com and with still plenty of time to bid on it, bidding has already gone to more than $500,000.
Also up for bids is the contract that sent Ruth from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees in 1919.

Actor Charlie Sheen was the owner of these two items who put them up for bid, ESPN reported.

"I've enjoyed these incredible items for more than two decades and the time has come," Sheen told ESPN. "Whatever price it brings is gravy."

Ruth hit .400 in the 1927 series, with two homers and seven RBI, leading the New York Yankees to a 4-0 sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

That was the year that Ruth set the regular-season home run record of 60 that wasn't broken until Roger Maris' 61 in 1961. Ruth had 165 RBI that season and batted .356.

This was one of the all-time great teams and seasons in baseball history.
The bidding for the contract for sending Ruth to New York had already reached $345,000.

Sheen told ESPN that the items were purchased in the early '90s, and that he displayed them in a bar area in his house.
