Constitution=propaganda...

The Olympic Committee or Berkeley, California?...

Jessie Vetter can't wear U.S. Constitution goalie mask to Sochi, IOC rules

Quote:
The International Olympic Committee has decided that U.S. goalie Jessie Vetter can't wear a custom mask featuring a quote from the U.S. Constitution to next month's Winter Games, because the Olympic charter prohibits any form of "publicity or propaganda" on athletes' clothing or equipment.

Graphics artist Ron Slater had designed the mask, which also happened to have been covered in gold leafing, that bore words from the Preamble to the Constitution.

Slater told InGoal magazine that the IOC does not approve of inscriptions that promote any particular country.

“No writings of any kind to promote the country is allowed,” he said. “A sort of ‘our country is better than your country” kind of thing that the IOC frowns upon. Her name had to come off because they see it as self promotion. They wanted everything to be team based. … Our original idea was ‘land of the free, home of the brave,’ and that would have had to have been removed as well.

Banning it on a hockey mask in a foreign country is almost forgivable.
But it's etched in stone on buildings and encased in glass in Washington DC but ignored in Congress and the White House, that's where the real problem is.

God forbid that another country see one of our founding documents.

1968: Black athletes make silent protest
Two black American athletes have made history at the Mexico Olympics by staging a silent protest against racial discrimination.
Tommie Smith and John Carlos, gold and bronze medallists in the 200m, stood with their heads bowed and a black-gloved hand raised as the American National Anthem played during the victory ceremony.
The pair both wore black socks and no shoes and Smith wore a black scarf around his neck. They were demonstrating against continuing racial discrimination of black people in the United States.
As they left the podium at the end of the ceremony they were booed by many in the crowd.

At a press conference after the event Tommie Smith, who holds seven world records, said: "If I win I am an American, not a black American. But if I did something bad then they would say 'a Negro'. We are black and we are proud of being black.
"Black America will understand what we did tonight."

Smith said he had raised his right fist to represent black power in America, while Carlos raised his left fist to represent black unity. Together they formed an arch of unity and power.
He said the black scarf represented black pride and the black socks with no shoes stood for black poverty in racist America.
Within a couple of hours the actions of the two Americans were being condemned by the International Olympic Committee.
A spokesperson for the organisation said it was "a deliberate and violent breach of the fundamental principles of the Olympic spirit."
It is widely expected the two will be expelled from the Olympic village and sent back to the US.
In September last year Tommie Smith, a student at San Jose State university in California, told reporters that black members of the American Olympic team were considering a total boycott of the 1968 games.

He said: "It is very discouraging to be in a team with white athletes. On the track you are Tommie Smith, the fastest man in the world, but once you are in the dressing rooms you are nothing more than a dirty Negro."

Controversy erupted in the days before the 1960 Olympics.

At that point in history, the United States and most western countries, did not recognize the communist government in mainland China. Instead the US and others viewed the leaders and people on the island of Taiwan as the deposed and rightful rulers of mainland China.

This was a problem for the International Olympic Committee.

In 1958, China withdrew from the 1960 Rome Olympics because they wanted Taiwan banned from participating.

In response the IOC, with the support of the Soviet Union but in opposition to US wishes, asked that Taiwan no longer march under the name "The Republic of China," but use the name of Taiwan or Formosa.

Taiwan considered boycotting the games, but decided against it.

Athletes from Taiwan were not happy about the name change forced on them.

When they marched into the Olympic stadium for the opening ceremony the lead Taiwanesse athlete held a sign reading, "Under Protest." IOC President Avery Brundage had to be talked out of banning the Taiwannese delegation from participating in the games.

The Olympics was now being used as tool in the foreign policy battle between the "free" West and the communist bloc. 1960 would not be the last time.

Eric Little, a devout Christian Missionary, refused to run on Sunday. the Olympic committee accommodated a change in the event he'd have to run.

Olympic have had a lot of politics involved in them like it or not. a mask is small potatoes.
