Chargers in the playoffs...with a little help from blind officiating...

Chargers got away with an uncalled penalty on Chiefsí missed field goal

Quote:
Itís rarely just one call that bites you in a loss, but the Kansas City Chiefs have reason to be angry at the officiating in their 27-24 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. The loss didnít affect Kansas Cityís playoff positioning ó they had the AFCís fifth seed wrapped up, which is why they rested many of their starters. However, with eight seconds left in regulation, the Chiefs were in position to win the game as kicker Ryan Succop lined up to kick a 41-yard game-winning field goal from the San Diego 23-yard line. Succop missed the try wide right, the game went into overtime and the Chargers won when Kansas City could not answer Nick Novakís 36-yard field goal on their first drive of the fifth quarter.

At least, thatís what Bill Leavyís crew would very much like to you to believe.

Leavyís crew botched a simple new rule, and as a result, the Chiefs were left without another try at that field goal at the end of regulation. Before the 2013 season, the NFLís Competition Committee put in place a new rule by which teams are not allowed to have more than six defenders on either side of the snapper during any field goal try. Itís supposed to be a five-yard penalty for illegal formation and a re-try, but Leavyís crew didnít get the memo. You can clearly see in the picture above that the Chargers have seven defenders on the line to Succopís left.

Bad calls can happen to anyone. I hope you aren't going to blame the MSM

Moral to the story, Succop should have made the field goal. The Steelers would have been happy.

99% there, but if Succop missed it due to seeing a wave of (illegal) players coming at him from one side, then the illegal formation CAUSED the errant kick...

99% sure Succup would have been jumping up and down making sure the refs were aware of it, they all just missed a call on a fairly new rule.

Most likely, but there's still that iota of doubt...

I am really not a fan of either team--nor do I harbor any distaste for either--so I am about as disinterested as anyone might be on this matter.

I do hate to see a call missed, however; and especially one that could affect the outcome of the game.

I am confident that the officials attempted to call everything correctly--no official would ever botch a call intentionally, thereby resulting in his ridicule--but that is very cold comfort, no doubt, to the fans of the Chargers (and even to those of us who hate to see a fundamental injustice done, however inadvertantly).
