Default Teen fan tasered by Phillies security after running onto field

It wasn't the voltage but the amps this young Philllies fan felt on Monday night in Philadelphia.

In the eighth inning of a Phillies-Cardinals game, a 17-year-old male hopped a fence at Citizens Bank Park. He fled security for a few seconds until a Philadelphia police officer fired a Taser gun at the boy from about 15-feet away, dropping him on the spot in left-center field.
The Philadelphia Inquirer spoke to this young man's dad on Tuesday morning and reports that the kid actually called his father to ask for permission before running on the field. The dad told him it wasn't the best of ideas — you think? — but the future Penn State student went ahead and did it anyway. He's being charged as a juvenile for resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and defiant trespass.

"He wasn't drinking. He was not on drugs," the father said.

The Philadelphia police commissioner, meanwhile, is publicly supporting the officer's actions. But the Phillies say they want to talk about whether or not such force is necessary for future trespassers.
Then again, I've seen fans at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago attack Royals coach Tom Gamboa with a switchblade as he defended himself in the first-base coach's box. That would have been a great time for security to break out the Tasers. Heck — billy clubs, claw hammers ...

And there are gray areas — like what happened at Oakland in the stands last season.

But this doofus in Philly was running on the field, being a nuisance like 17-year-olds can be. Shane Victorino(notes) was never in danger. Nobody was.

This happens in every ballpark, sometimes many times a season, and security always gets the guy without having to tase him. (Until this particular officer got tired of running.)

And it would happen in Philly, where fans will never live down their mostly undeserved reputation for misbehavior.

Yes, sometimes we associate tasing with a little comedy. But Amnesty International keeps track of this stuff and says it can be deadly.

This kid was fine; after he regained the ability to walk, he did so under his own power as security took him into custody.

Do we want fans running onto the field? No matter how entertaining it seems at the moment, no, we don't. They don't belong out there.

But what we really don't want is security pulling out Tasers at a baseball game when it's not necessary

Maybe the next dumbass who thinks running onto the field will consider whether or not he wants to be tased. I do not think this was an excessive use of force. If they would have tackled him, he could have had broken bones or a concussion.

The only reason he got tasered was the fat guy chasing him couldn't keep up the chase. I think they over-reacted.

The problem the author has is this...

Quote:
Shane Victorino was never in danger. Nobody was.
Pure hindsight mentality...

ALL people that run onto a field should be considered an immediate threat...ALL...

I'll take due diligence and taser every single one over not tasering and having that ONE incident where someone runs onto a field and commits a preventable violent act because security got handcuffed by political correctness and criminal protection...

And we must not overlook the undeniable entertainment value.

I'll bet they could charge more for tickets, if they could guarantee this sort of bonus.

"I went to a taser-show and a baseball game broke out!"...

let me ask this question to myself: What if that were my 17 year old son; how would I feel about tasing him?
my answer: My kid isn't a dumbass --- he wouldn't have run onto the field.

Security didn't just go up to this guy in his seat & tase him.
The young man ran onto the field & fled security.

You do remember the kissing bandit chick don't you?

I know, rare exception...

Of course this kid should have been tased if he refused to be immediately compliant. It's the most humane way of subduing a criminal. Tackling him or taking a baton to him needlessly put both the criminal and officer at risk of injury.

I think that there should be signs posted at all venues of this sort that say:

"If you interrupt the enjoyment of this event by running on-stage/on the field/ on the court, we will not chase you, we will simply taser your ass and then drag your twitching body off by your feet. The crowd will cheer and laugh and we'll all get kick out of watching you twitch. Then, you will be arrested, charged and if you decide that you need to be this stupid in the nude, you will be thrown into a cell just as you are."

Question for the group: will the young man be henceforth known as "Buzz," or "Sparky?"
