I said the same thing in about the 80's.
Before anyone even knew how it was spread, I still think that was the best idea, but the gays screamed bloody murder. Said it was discrimination to have to tell your dentist you're HIV. They had so many lawsuits going, the government didn't dare "quarantine" like they used to TB patients before they found out exactly how that disease spread.

Chandron, there were still many misconceptions about the AIDS virus even in that day and time. MANY people even at this point believed it might be the best way to handle this disease. So Huckabee making this statement does not upset my applecart in the least... sorry.

Those that didn't "quarantine" themselves should have been quarantined. The same can be said about almost any disease that is contagious. The type of quarantine necessary would be the only question. The fact that it is a deadly disease only makes that more relevant. For a public official it is necessary to err on the side of public safety. I would like to point out that it was only suggested and discussed not carried out. If he did not even discuss it he did not belong in office because you cannot use political correctness as an excuse for people dying.

I'm gonna add that I too think that would have been prudent at the time as AIDS was contagious and nearly 100% fatal. Made perfect sense to quarantine those afflicted. Even today we quarantine diseases like that. Such as TB and MRSA. So it's not like there's no precedent.

AIDS was thought to be primarily a gay issue, so the natural progression says that gay people would be more "in the know" than the straight community... I don't see why you get to sit in judgement of others' ignorance because you believe every politician had a duty to stay up at night with reports on this disease...He wasn't even in any political office when said it... ![]()

It may very well have taken 6 years for the CDC report to make it to Arkansas. News travels slower there. Hmm. That's pretty slow, even for Arkansas. It's more likely that the guy was (is) a xenophobic member of the religious right. My apologies to non-xenophobic Arkansans. |
