Immigration heats up GOP Race
![]() JOSE MORENO The Bible, abortion and taxes took a backseat in yesterday's CNN/YouTube Republican presidential debate as candidates were bombarded with questions about illegal immigration from the get go. Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani was at the epicenter of the hot topic throughout the night. He was hit with the first question by a Brooklynite who said New York was a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants during his two terms as mayor. Giuliani tried to appease both sides of the immigration issue saying that during his tenure the city allowed exceptions for children of illegal immigrants to go to school; gave undocumented people free emergency medical care, and allowed "illegals" to report crimes. But, the key point he said was that "we reported thousands and thousands and thousands of names of illegal immigrants who committed crimes to the immigration service. They did not deport them." Giuliani, the front-runner in national polls, then accused former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney of employing illegal immigrants at his home and running a "sanctuary mansion." "It just happens you have a special immigration problem that nobody else up here has. You were employing illegal immigrants. That is a pretty serious thing. They were under your nose," Giuliani said. Romney replied it would "not be American" to check the papers of workers employed by a contractor simply because they have a "funny accent." He had landscapers at his Belmont, Mass., home who turned out to be in the country without papers. Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson took a strict stance on immigration rallying against President Bush's failed immigration reform plan. The plan would have granted citizenship to immigrants who have been here for a long time and increased the number of guest workers allowed annually in the U.S. When asked by a YouTube user if he would veto a bill that involves amnesty for those that have come here illegally, Thompson answered with an emphatic "yes." More? Immigration heats up GOP Race The problem here is obvious, enforcing the rule of law is politically incorrect.. ![]()
