Damn Trey, you were so close! I bet you only needed another 2 or 3 dozen Benghazi hearings and you would've finally nailed Hillary.

Oh well.

Kind of an odd, sudden retirement though. Gowdy accepted another committee head position recently (Which is why he was stepping down from House Ethics), and he had sent a fundraising email just a few hours before the announcement.

Might be nothing, might be something.

Quote:
January 31, 2018 Press Release
Spartanburg, SC - Rep. Trey Gowdy (SC-04) released the following statement announcing he will leave Congress at the end of this term and return to work in the justice system:

"Words cannot adequately express my gratitude to the people of South Carolina for the privilege of representing them in the House of Representatives. The Upstate of South Carolina has an incredible depth and breadth of assets including numerous women and men capable of representing us. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to serve in the People's House and-prior to Congress-to advocate on behalf of justice in our court systems.

I will not be filing for re-election to Congress nor seeking any other political or elected office; instead I will be returning to the justice system. Whatever skills I may have are better utilized in a courtroom than in Congress, and I enjoy our justice system more than our political system. As I look back on my career, it is the jobs that both seek and reward fairness that are most rewarding.

There is no perfect time to make this announcement, but with filing opening in six weeks, it is important to give the women and men in South Carolina who might be interested in serving ample time to reflect on the decision.

To my wife, Terri, and our two children, Watson and Abigail: thank you for all you sacrificed, missed, or did alone so I could serve as both a prosecutor and a member of the House.

To my parents and my three sisters: thank you for having confidence in me and high expectations for me, even when I did not.

To the women and men I worked with at the South Carolina Court of Appeals, the United States District Court, the U.S. Attorney's Office, the 7th Circuit Solicitor's Office, and in Congress: thank you for the texture, depth and joy you added to life.

To the law enforcement officers and victims of crime: thank you for personifying courage.

To those across South Carolina and our country who, over the past 7 years, have expressed words of encouragement, accountability and even criticism: thank you. All are needed for those in public service.

The book of Ecclesiastes teaches us there is a time and a season for all things. There is a time to start and a time to end. There is a time to come and a time to go. This is the right time, for me, to leave politics and return to the justice system."

There's nothing "odd" about going where he believes his skills could be "better utilized"...

He also is one of the VERY FEW that leaves instead of retiring due to age or being some 30-term lifer...He EPITOMIZES the idea of self-term limits...and should be applauded for it...

My only question(s) are "Lawyer or judge?; local or federal (Future Trump appointee)?...

You might be right, a seat on the 4th Circuit just opened yesterday. It's just odd to me that only recently he had moved to a different oversight committee, and was still pushing out fundraising a few hours before announcing his retirement. Didn't seem like he was winding down to a leave.

Ive heard two things. First is that He's been chosen to replace Jeff Sessions. Trump can't completely obstruct Muller because Sessions recused himself. So if Sessions gets culled from the Trump train soon you'll know who they want to replace him.

Second is the same as the other Republicans who are inexplicably retiring, they are all being investigated by Mueller for taking Russian cash. Paul Ryan won't be running for re-election either.

Mueller and his hand picked lynch mob hasn't been able to find evidence of Trump colluding with the Russians but he is somehow forcing Gowdy into retirement.

Other than the voices in your head, we have no idea from where you may have heard such things.

Gowdy has informed the nation of his plans for over a year now. Ryan made it clear, when asked, he has no intention of leaving his position.

I will hate to see Gowdy go as he is one of the most honest and patriotic of those in our Congress. In order to drain the swamp, we need people like Gowdy to replace the swamp creatures.

However, he has served his time and is leaving on his terms. As someone that favors term limits, it would apply to even those we like. So I wish him well and hope he is able to pursue the career that makes him the most happy.

I was so sorry to learn that Trey Gowdy is leaving Congress. He is one of the very few good ones, and it will be a sad day for this country when he leaves. I'd love to see him replace drug warrior Sessions or be on the Supreme Court, though.
