Sorry to say it but McCain has run one of the worst campaigns in recent memory.

Yes, but I blame the Republican base. He clearly did not get the big money Mitt or Giuliani would have garnered. Conservatives have never liked him. My heart goes out to him, because he is a true conservative.
In the end he listened to wrong headed managers to try to win.
If his party had not gone after him and been dragged along kicking and squealing when American voters decided they wanted him instead of the hard liners- If they had stopped and said hey let's listen to these people who are more moderate- then he would have had a chance. But the unforgiving right wing of the Republican party who dropped Bush Sr. wanted all or nothing. And as with the George Sr's second campaign, that is exactly what they got.
Nothing.
Will the GOP have some members smart enough to rebuild the party to look more like American conservatives? True conservatives? Only time will tell.

Not all Republicans view McCain as a "true" conservative and I believe this is why the base failed to support him fully. That said...McCain has always been "in charge" of his own campaign. His message and strategy were not consistent.

I still think it was a mistake not to pick Mitt Romney. Mitt is a good speaker and would have been more of a match for Joe Biden.
And I still think if McCain had had more money, he would have done better.
But yeah, I guess I just find myself looking for excuses because he really fired a lot of people up during his past campaign. Now he just looks like he want to win at all cost. And that cost him!

I guess one of the main things I look for in a candidate is leadership. For me..my quest often transcends political ideology.I liked Rudy....I may have been willing to accept Mitt but I could not go with McCain,he is not the same man he was 8 years ago and I differed with him on some key issues. Today...McCain seems desperate, erratic and cynical and as you say..he looks like a man who wants to win at all cost.

That said...just look at what McCain is up against and we've seen this play out before. Many see the Bush administration as a failure of epic proportions.

Bottom line here.....

Rightly or wrongly..McCain will have to answer for the Bush administration no matter how he tries to distance himself from it. Even if McCain had won every debate, held fast on his positions and never went negative...beating Obama could well remain the impossible dream.

I'm sure the Republican party is wondering "why oh why couldn't the financial sector wait just another 6 or 8 months to collapse", . If not for that and his "maverick" move of picking Palin as a running mate, I think he likely would not have needed to go negative, because he'd be in the lead right now and well positioned to take the election.
