I felt Obama answered more questions on point than McCain (particularly those that involved specifics) - but, overall, the debate was a wash-out. I learned nothing new about either of them. They both danced around the questions and stuck to their stump speech sound bytes. I thought it was the most boring of the debates yet - so boring, in fact, at 10:00 we turned it off and watched The Shield.

McCain seemed tense, edgy, and angry through most of it. After pinging around like a marble in a pinball machine through the bailout vote he missed another opportunity to look composed and thoughtful. And though I know he can't help his age (I can't help mine either!) he looked sooooooo old. That would not be such a big deal except I kept imagining him keeling over and PRESIDENT PALIN being sworn in!!!!!

I think Obama won, hands down.
McCain used too many phrases that one would typically hear from a really bad televangelist, and he tried to dehumanize Obama as much as he possibly could. His whole "I'm older so I'm better" schpeal got old pretty fast. "My friends", "he doesn't understand", everything under the sun other than actual facts. Obama was teflon coated in the debate. Everything McCain tried to pin against Obama slid right off him with quick comebacks and giving facts and information to combat the BS. McCain was velcro most of the time when it came to when he was attacked about a subject. He wiggled the best he could to get out, but he ended up tangling himself up even more, particularly with the issue of tax cuts. And then got tangled again when it came to the subject of going into Iraq in the first place. "The surge worked"--so what, we shouldn't have been IN there when we were supposed to be going after Al Queda and Bin Laden, and that was the point Obama was making, and made the point quite well. McCain was left with making childish remarks. IF this really was McCain's preferred debating method, he's in for some rough times. |
