Default Close-up on juvenile justice

Obama says Ayers was just a "guy in the neighborhood"?...

Then someone explain to me why his wife, when she was the Associate Dean of Student Services and Director of the University Community Service Center Services, had him come to the University of Chicago to speak...on the same stage as her husband no less...

Children who kill are called "super predators," "people with no conscience," "feral pre-social beings" -- and "adults."

William Ayers, author of A Kind and Just Parent: The Children of Juvenile Court (Beacon Press, 1997), says "We should call a child a child. A 13-year-old who picks up a gun isn't suddenly an adult. We have to ask other questions: How did he get the gun? Where did it come from?"

Ayers, who spent a year observing the Cook County Temporary Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago, is one of four panelists who will speak on juvenile justice at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in the C-Shop. The panel, which marks the 100th anniversary of the juvenile justice system in the United States, is part of the Community Service Center's monthly discussion series on issues affecting the city of Chicago. The event is free and open to the public.

Ayers will be joined by Sen. Barack Obama, Senior Lecturer in the Law School, who is working to combat legislation that would put more juvenile offenders into the adult system; Randolph Stone, Director of the Mandel Legal Aid Clinic; Alex Correa, a reformed juvenile offender who spent seven years in Cook County Temporary Detention Center; Frank Tobin, a former priest and teacher at the Detention Center who helped Correa; and Willy Baldwin, who grew up in public housing and is currently a teacher at the Detention Center.

The juvenile justice system was founded by Chicago reformer Jane Addams, who advocated the establishment of a separate court system for children which would act like a "kind and just parent" for children in crisis.

One hundred years later, the system is "overcrowded, under-funded, over-centralized and racist," Ayers said.

Michelle Obama, Associate Dean of Student Services and Director of the University Community Service Center, hopes bringing issues like this to campus will open a dialogue between members of the University community and the broader community.
For being just some guy in the neighborhood, he sure ended up at the same places Obama was a whole bunch of times...

You know, ending up in the same places is kinda odd. It must be a conspiracy. Same neighborhood, the man is an educator and was asked to speak at a conference on children.... Hmmmmm... that's out of the realm of realistic expectations as well.

[/sarcasm]

I'm shocked that you are trying to CREATE something out of nothing. I'm shocked that you don't have better things to do with your life than come up with these amateur conspiracy theories. You are getting closer and closer to bhkad, and that's something we should be concerned about.

Because he was a speaker who filled the subject requirements of the event.
That was her task to get speakers to an event and make it a success.

Some see far too little while others see far too much! I can't deny that these associations are troubling but we can find these and other unsavory associations with all political candidates. In all walks of life one runs into the good..the bad and the ugly. This is especially true for politicians and these associations do not mean that they agree with everything these individuals represent! Silence can lend connect but knowing someone does not make them your buddy or mentor.I still have a problem with Obama's "silence" on the Rev Wright's racist and UN-American rhetoric but I also have a problem with some of McCain's past associations. Where does it all end and "who" can rise above these accusations? I can't say that associations with the Mafia are always benign but many are more than willing to excuse those associations!

Guilt by association is perhaps the most unfair way to judge any candidate.Just look who Jesus associated with, thieves, liars, prostitutes and murderers.Who today would vote for him or even want to be associated with him yet they call him King even though by the same standards, we condemn others for the "same" associations.

Perhaps we should judge our candidates by what they do and what they say and place less emphasis on who they have known.

To be honest..I did not base my decision to support Obama and denounce McCain "solely" on who they associated with nor should you!

But irrelevant of what YOU think, let me ask you a simple question...

Shoulsn't the information be OUT THERE for people to make those decisions on their own?...

That's a big issue with not only this, but almost every issue some take with Obama and his judgement...

The press, his supporters, and even Obama himself tells the people what they can talk about and what they can't...And that's not only unfair for the deciders (the public), but also unfair to objective journalism, for the the right of expression, and free debate...

So you see far too little...That's great...You can have your opinion and I'm DAMN sure that you haven't seen me try to prevent that in ANY fashion...

But what happens when someone does NOT see "far too little"...You know...Like ME?...

I get attacked, I'm told I'm acting irrationally...I'm told I'm the one smearing...I even get told that "I'M" the one wrong based on other members...

You don't see a problem with that?...I sure as hell do...

I would HOPE you would want all information public and let people form their own judgements and opinions...

If 99% agree with you great...If 99% disagree with you, that's great...

AS LONG AS the information gets displayed...

But that's not what happening...

Everytime someone brings something up that has ANYTHING to do with Obama, the supporters form a circle and attack the one displaying the information...Instead of simply saying "I don't agree", we get "I don't agree and you're an a-hole for bringing it up!"...

We're now at a point where that stops real debate, all criticism is automatically tossed off instead of being legitimately refuted, and the ones that show it are dismissed...

I'm getting VERY annoyed when debate gets tossed aside in favor of "I will criticize YOU for criticizing my candidate", and it's becoming an increasing trend here...

Absolutely... the information should be out there but basing one's entire campaighn on it is well..a bit..redundant! I also believe this guilt by association theme is beginning to wear on Obama and McCain supporters alike. As a McCain supporter..your going to express your views when someone tries to nail your candidate by association and the same is true with Obama supporters! However..how many of us base our preference on these guilt by association stories? Unfortunately for the McCain camp..not many...

But why?...because McCains handlers over plaid the smear campaign and that's why your being dismissed when you persist in this endeavor! You know..it's kinda like the way YOU dismiss smear attempts against McCain.

At some point..we are all shooting blanks but we all persist in the smear campaign. The difference is this..when I do it it's to reinforce my decision and the decision "already" made by fellow Obama supporters but when you smear Obama, you actually BELIEVE you're going to sway people against Obama!

Good Luck..you're running out of time and the people have lost their patience with your parties ABUSE of canned SMEAR...
