Nothing dramatic. My 401k didn't suffer much. If I were closer to retirement it might have actually gone up last week.

I like the idea of privatizing. I'd even let people who support SS to stick to it and earn less if they so choose. Besides ... what really annoys me is how much the system discriminates against single people.

That was the beauty of Bush's plan...

It was OPTIONAL...

There was NOTHING in it that FORCED anyone to enter the program...If someone was so scared by the Dems fearmongering that big, evil Wall Street was going to rape them financially and deprive them of their retirement funds than the option to NOT be part of the privatization program was there...

And anyone could've "stuck with the old 2%"...

Limit where people can invest the money to ultra-low risk stocks and you'd be outperforming SS, giving people a MORE secure retirement, you'd be taking the money out of the control of the Feds. and taking away a way for them to spend money they don't really have, and you'd be putting money into the private sector where it can grow the economy, instead of the Fed. debt.
Here's the gain /loss tracker of what's left of my little investment portfolio. I have a couple pending sell orders left and I'm out of here as they say.

The bottom line is the total lost.

Were your investments in ultra low risk stocks?? Doubtful.

BTW - Selling when the market is down is dumb. The idea is to buy low, sell high, not buy whenever and bail out when the market drops. I've got some extra cash coming in the next few months and if there's anything left after buying new windows for my house, I'm going to buy banking stocks. They are cheap right now and will go back up again.

They are in steady stocks that usually go up a little more each year. I studied them before buying. And they have been losing money for a while. This just put the icing on the cake. It was used to illustrate that seniors want to use excess money they don't need to survive on for investing. And as I said they wouldn't trust the government to choose the stock portfolio especially in light of recent events.
You may do great wit your choices and make a real bundle! Just don't take it out of Social Security.
