The bogus Sarah Palin Banned Books List

Quote:
Palin Derangement Syndrome strikes again. This time it’s hysterical librarians and their readers on the Internet disseminating a bogus list of books Gov. Sarah Palin supposedly banned in 1996. Looks like some of these library people failed reading comprehension. Take a look at the list below and you’ll find books Gov. Palin supposedly tried to ban…that hadn’t even been published yet. Example: The Harry Potter books, the first of which wasn’t published until 1998.

The smear merchants who continue to circulate the list also failed to do a simple Google search, which would have showed them that the bogus Sarah Palin Banned Book List is almost an exact copy-and-paste reproduction of a generic list of “Books Banned at One Time or Another in the United States” that has been floating around the Internet for years. STACLU notes that the official Obama campaign website is also perpetuating the fraud. And it’s spread to craigslist, where some unhinged user is posting images likening Palin to Hitler. (since been removed)

The person who first spread the Palin smear is identified as “Andrew Aucoin,” a commenter on the blog of librarian Jessamyn West. West has done the right thing in keeping the bogus comment up and pointing out in her main post that “there appears to be no truth to the claim made by the commenter, and no further documentation or support for this has turned up.

It’s a fake. Not true. Total B.S. A lie.

If it gets sent to you by a moonbat friend or family member, set ‘em all straight. Fight the smears. They’ve only just begun.

From the Anchorage Daily News story that inflamed P.D.S.:

Quote:
Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.

According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn’t fully support her and had to go.

Emmons had been city librarian for seven years and was well liked. After a wave of public support for her, Palin relented and let Emmons keep her job.

It all happened 12 years ago and the controversy long ago disappeared into musty files. Until this week. Under intense national scrutiny, the issue has returned to dog her. It has been mentioned in news stories in Time Magazine and The New York Times and is spreading like a virus through the blogosphere.

The stories are all suggestive, but facts are hard to come by. Did Palin actually ban books at the Wasilla Public Library?

Were any books censored banned? June Pinell-Stephens, chairwoman of the Alaska Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee since 1984, checked her files Wednesday and came up empty-handed.

Pinell-Stephens also had no record of any phone conversations with Emmons about the issue back then. Emmons was president of the Alaska Library Association at the time.
I wonder how Obama feels knowing he's "so sincere" about fighting a clean race while every person around him won't listen...Not even the moderators at his own website which allow people to throw mud first without checking instead of having their posts set in a queue so the moderators can decide if a blog is out of line...

Change you can believe in...

Snopes also dispels the rumor there was a list of books but does go on to say:

Quote:

According to the Anchorage Daily News, around the time Sarah Palin first assumed the mayorship of Wasilla back in 1996, she initiated some speculative discussions with the city's librarian about the possibility of removing some "objectionable" books from the public library:
In December 1996, [city librarian Mary Ellen] Emmons told her hometown newspaper, the Frontiersman, that Palin three times asked her — starting before
she was sworn in — about possibly removing objectionable books from the library if the need arose.

When the matter came up for the second time in October 1996, during a City Council meeting, Anne Kilkenny, a Wasilla housewife who often attends council meetings, was there.

Like many Alaskans, Kilkenny calls the governor by her first name.

"Sarah said to Mary Ellen, 'What would your response be if I asked you to remove some books from the collection?" Kilkenny said.

"I was shocked. Mary Ellen sat up straight and said something along the line of, 'The books in the Wasilla Library collection were selected on the basis of national selection criteria for libraries of this size, and I would absolutely resist all efforts to ban books.'"

Palin didn't mention specific books at that meeting, Kilkenny said.

Palin herself, questioned at the time, called her inquiries rhetorical and simply part of a policy discussion with a department head "about understanding and following administration agendas," according to the Frontiersman article.

Nope. Sen. Obama's machine is responsible for it. The same machine that got him elected to Congress and the same machine that got him the Dem. nomination - the DNC. They can control what's goes on thier website, the same as cnredd can. But, they have chosen to do what redd has done and allow people to post stupid crap whenever they want to. The difference is that cnredd isn't running for POTUS and Sen. Obama is. The difference is that this forum is about bringing together different opinons and Sen. Obama's site is about Sen. Obama.

Only after taking a public opinion poll, consulting with the UN and checking their Tarot cards....

Thank you...

That's a point that's been whirling in my head the last couple of weeks...

It's not that Obama's campaign invents the bile...It's that they ALLOW it on their own site and feign responsibility when called on it...

Obama has 300 policy advisors and he can't come up with 2 website moderators?...They don't have software which would only let new blogs or posts show up once they've been greenlighted? (The software I use has that option)...

One would THINK (logically, that is), that a presidential candidate would have a website that goes by the thinking "I only want legitimate discussions on the site representing me, so I won't allow people to come by willy-nilly to spout disgusting and unfair claims, accusations, and outright smear...even if their ultimate reasoning is to help me get elected."...

Instead, they play Pontius Pilate and wash their hands of their supporters' actions...

Nahhh. Too easy...

You do realize that you're talking about a difference between a web-site admin, and ACTUAL POLICY makers.
Moreover, I am really curious as to how much traffic the Obama web-site is generating. I would imagine it would be substantial.
To lay vague blame at "Obama's machine" as if it is somehow meaningful is astounding.

I mean, Corsi PUT OUT A BOOK FILLED with lies and smears.
Whose feet do we lay THAT at?

And there you just jumped from "Obama's machine" to DIRECTLY TALKING about Obama himself.
Do you realize when you make such huge leaps?

Obama's web-site would conceivably cover virtually every aspect of the "Politics" / "Elections" scheme, and every sub-thread that has been touched by the politics.
It's about MORE than just "Obama", and includes the campaign and platform.

For somebody like you who ignores the campaign and platform, I'm not surprised you would miss that detail...

Guilty until proven innocent...
Quite frankly, considering the REAL issues in this election, I would hope that people would not get side-tracked over an online web-forum mechanics.

But hey. If this is the "blame Obama for everything" mentality, I guess that's your freedom of speech.
Last time I checked, no matter how illogical I think that is, it's still allowed and protected.

Just out of curiousity, have EITHER of you taken the time to see if that board has ANTI-OBAMA threads on it?
Possibly discussing Corsi's crap?
