Default Michelle

As I watched the first night of the Democratic convention, I thought, "Hey this ain't bad. Looks like their getting their act together."
They talked about education which is near and dear to my heart.
Ted Kennedy and others reminded me of why I used to believe in the Democratic party to the exclusion of all others: The base consisted of worker rights, human rights, and civil rights. In short the DP was always the party of the little man; the every day woman and the unheard child and senior; the party of the disenfranchised immigrant and minority.

As Michelle Obama gave her speech tonight, scripted though it was, she told the story of two people who could have been poster children for the old Democratic party that I once knew.
The fact they both put aside money and brilliant careers to go home and assist their neighbors, is a testament to the strong will and undying spirit that has been the standard of such people as Roosevelt, Truman and Lincoln. Not to mention JFK and RFK.
I applaud Michelle. She gave a great speech and carried it off with flawless grace.
I wasn't the first to report that I observed the quality, but yes, I found her
Jaquelin Kennedy-eque.
Only Jackie was never asked to give this kind of a speech. Times were different. The wives of Presidents did charity work and raised families.
Michelle Obama will no doubt adopt a charity if her husband becomes POTUS, and continue to raise their two girls.
But wouldn't it be great to have an articulate, altruistic first Lady who is also a graceful and beautiful mom?

Its a tough row to hoe in a way. She is smart and direct. But doing that without sounding brassy or lecturing isn't easy. She did it well.

Michelle did very well and I agree,it was scripted like all of these convention speeches are. However, my first impression of her was not good. I thought of her as tough and too direct but tonight I saw a softer side and I know more about where she came from and her dedication.Yes,she is passionate but she is also graceful..

I just heard the the replay of it...

I would consider it a solid triple if not a homerun, and taken on it's own, will help Obama...

But there's a problem with this...not the speech itself, but with Michelle giving a speech at the convention...

The second you push Michelle Obama 2.0 out onto the stage, Michelle Obama 1.0 immediately comes into play as a legitimate discussion on differences...It's highly restrictive for anyone to say "You're only allowed to discuss her convention speech and NOT mention anything she's said while she was campaigning on behalf of her husband."...

Also, it totally negates Obama's "Lay off my wife" threat he made not too long ago...If he gives her the spotlight to point out any an all positives, any and negatives must equally be fair game...It would be outright disturbing to think it's A-OK to have her give political speeches and then turn around and tell everyone she shouldn't be involved in discussions because she's not a political person...

It depends on how she conducts herself and on how the public perceives her.
If they understand that she grew up in south Chicago and went back to make it a better place, they will also understand how she could make those previous statements. It's hard to look poverty and ignorance and disability in the face in a disadvantaged area and not voice some resentment that the grand old flag just passed these folks on by. The only time government usually cares about a black neighborhood is to reap the benefits of some Realtor who wants to sack the locals in favor of the fast buck and call it neighborhood renewal.

If the public doesn't perceive that, then they will continue to believe the slogans and innuendos put forth by the power brokers who on both sides of the aisle sharpen their axes on each breath of McCain's and Obama's supporters.
To the detriment of their fellow Americans.

Michelle gives me the impression that she can handle a good fight and there may be a tactic in play here! She just might be the bait that they are hoping to get some play out of. The question is this, will they go for it? McCain is almost dead even with Obama,I would council a little caution at this juncture!

like Jackie Kennedy...or Michelle Obama?

edited to add: with all due respect to Mrs. Bush - I would far prefer her to have been POTUS for eight years than the lug she's married to.
