Obama rejects proposed California gay marriage ban

Quote:
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who previously said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to each state, has announced his opposition to a California ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriages.

In a letter to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club read Sunday at the group's annual Pride Breakfast in San Francisco, the Illinois senator said he supports extending "fully equal rights and benefits to same-sex couples under both state and federal law."

"And that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states," Obama wrote.

Obama had previously said he opposes same-sex marriage but that each state should make its own decision.
Whatever way the wind blows...

In other words, he is pandering to get the gay vote in order to better his chances of being elected. Doesn't seem like he is being very honest, and it is in line with his overall character. In fact, it is deceptive, given the fact that he is telling those potential voters something that he does not support.

Business as usual for Obama...

Really,
Not much different from the voting improprieties in George Bush's brother's state of Florida, where so many persons of color were disenfranchised.
The bottom line is getting elected, isn't it....and picking up the chips where they lay, "afterwards".....Money talk, Bull walk.
Pandering, Schmandering....and you're voting for the other guy, aren't you....
Excuse me....Oreos and milk sound real good about now.

You are really reaching on this one. What does Bush's brother have to do with Obama's comments?? At least you acknowledge that Barack is not honest.

Sounds like you are OK with Obama pandering to get the vote, even though it shows lack of integrity.

I have not decided who gets my vote, but you can rest assured that Obama will not. As far as your milk and cookies, enjoy...

Modern lawmakers are not smart enough to make this decision. It's not that I think one side is wrong or right. This amendment -either to make it illegal or legal- is something that needs to be thought out for the other legal ramifications and repercussions as well as its affect on society.
And what scares me is the fact California exports its thinking to the rest of the states via big voter block influence on powerful people.
I think Governor Schwarzenegger was right to oppose it and I think Obama is right to oppose it. Now lets see if he is similarly opposed to Left leaning amendments to the marriage laws.

Your missing the point...

Obama had previously said he opposes same-sex marriage but that each state should make its own decision.
NOW he publicly states that "each state should make its own decision"...AS LONG AS it's the same one that he agrees with...

Even though he disagreed with it before...

If I told you "It's up to you" and then later say "You should choose the way "I" think", you'd call me a hypocrite 20 fold...and you'd be correct...

Illinois senator said he supports extending "fully equal rights and benefits to same-sex couples under both state and federal law."

How does that conflict with the states allowing or disallowing gay marriage?
I heard him say in a speech that you can call it something else so religious groups won't get offended, but give gay couples equal protection under the law for whatever they want to call their (cohabitative) relationship.

.................................................. ...

exactly

I love the way we get to have more information today than we used to get before the internet and 24/7 news channels. But there was a lot to be said for silly candidate name-calling to stay in the corner barrooms, where it belongs...and usually originates anyway.

Geez. Do you always read without comprehension...the point being made was not to compare Obama to Jeb Bush...but that's what you got out of that. So I rest my case, on that one.
Pandering? Obama panders? McCain panders. The pandering of politicians for votes is nothing new and germane to the territory. Should one be surprised by the fact? I think not. Move on.

Sounds like you are OK with Obama pandering to get the vote, even though it shows lack of integrity.

Him showing lack of integrity, would be your perception, not mine. Everyone is not prone to think the worst of the first serious black candidate for the highest office in the land. History is being made...though you could care less.
Why is that? And let's not get into a circular about "some of your best friends being "black".

I have not decided who gets my vote, but you can rest assured that Obama will not. As far as your milk and cookies, enjoy...
I could care less, in fact, my comments weren't even directed toward you...no one asked you what your opinion was. Are starved for the attention?
