Clinton's female base torn over loss
Quote:
This is what happens when you live your life by "identity politics"... You have people voting for women based on the fact that they're a woman (and of course, men voting for the woman to "even things out")... This is still happening the other way too, where you have people voting for the black guy based on the fact that they're black (and of course, whites voting for the black guy to "even things out")... Ain't it great when you have a primary where voting for the BEST person ranks about 5th in the list of priorities?... ![]()

I met a lot of women out on the road with my husband who said they were disappointed and even angered by Obama's (then) close numbers. I don't know what their personal stories were that they wanted a woman president. But they were from all walks of life. And some said they wouldn't vote and some said they would vote for McCain if Obama became the nominee.
I wonder now if Hillary's speech made a difference to them and the way they will vote now. There are those who are voting for Barak Obama who believe he will be the best choice for their particular causes. And there are many who will vote for him because they want change and because it might as well be an African American-because we've tried the white guys only-and he couldn't be any worse than some of them. One thing is for sure, the first is always the hardest. The first to break the sound barrier, climb the tallest mountain, lead a people out of oppression. Then others follow and it becomes, if not a comon place occurance, one that doesn't cause a big stir. And don't forget there are still a few people who will vote McCain not because they consider his leadership and experience, but because he is a white male. And because their world's "just not ready for a black or a woman president."

I can't help but weigh in here..my wife is a charge nurse in very large nursing home. Hillary has a lot of support among the white old ladies. Some like Hillary because she is a women but most "hate" Obama simply because he is black! I know we are talking about a much older generation but I tell you the truth, when them ol' ladies see a photo of Obama they actually "cringe" at even the sight of him! My wife is convinced that "race" is indeed a factor with her elderly patients. Many of us have "moved beyond the issue" but many of the elderly women have not and will not...move on..
