I agree with all you said, pjohns except I maintain that with a close, close race either side can make mischief and usually does. It will be the old fight to the finish and both sides counting on finagling, sculdugery, and fraud.
I call em as I see em. Had my eyes wide open since the Kennedy election and the mafia get out the vote campaign . then every election... Nixon's people bungling, 2000's votes found in the desert months later, and non felons being unable to vote cause their name sounded like a felon's ..etcetera and etcetera

I certainly would not suppose that Gov. Romney is on such an elevated moral plane as to be above that sort of thing. But the incumbent is in a position to do some things that a challenger simply cannot do, in order to create mischief. For instance (if he is so inclined), the incumbent could begin a war--just look at Syria right now--in the hope that it might create a temporary rally-round-the-flag effect, which tends to aid the incumbent. Or he could announce that his Department of State has come to some sort of agreement with Russia or China, or some other adversary--either an arms agreement or a trade agreement--that might help his chances in November.

The challenger may be just as cynical as the incumbent is; he just is not in any position to do these sorts of things...

Obama is not Reagan. I don't think he would start a war for political gain seeing as how he didn't even want to go into Libya.

I lived it. Lived in Houston when they were captured and my uncle's company and every other oil person had to leave. Hostages? Hello, look it up if you were too young at the time.

I wasn't too young, I watched them be captive for a year or so until the moment Reagan was sworn in and they were released. Taught me that a p*ssie in the oval office isn't a good thing. On top of that we got a great economy rolling that lasted 30 years.
