Political Lies: Episode 2 (oops...that was just misspeaking )

Democrats Unleashed Some 'Dubious Or Misleading Claims,' Fact Checkers Say : It's All Politics : NPR

Quote:
Just as they did during the Republican National Convention, independent fact checkers spent the first day of the Democratic National Convention listening for claims that don't add up — and found them.

— FactCheck.org says it heard "a number of dubious or misleading claims" from the Democrats who spoke on stage Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C. Among the problems it found:

— "The keynote speaker and others claimed the Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, would raise taxes on the 'middle class.' He has promised he won't. Democrats base their claim on a study that doesn't necessarily lead to that conclusion."

— "The keynote speaker, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, also said there have been 4.5 million 'new jobs' under Obama. The fact is the economy has regained only 4 million of the 4.3 million jobs lost since Obama took office."

— "A Democratic governor said Romney 'left his state 47th out of 50 in job growth.' Actually, Massachusetts went from 50th in job creation during Romney's first year to 28th in his final year."

— "Multiple speakers repeated a claim that the Ryan/Romney Medicare plan would cost seniors $6,400 a year. That's a figure that applied to Ryan's 2011 budget plan, but his current proposal (the one Romney embraces) is far more generous."

— "Rep. James Clyburn engaged in partisan myth-making when he said 'Democrats created Social Security' while Republicans 'cursed the darkness.' History records strong bipartisan support in both House and Senate for the measure President Roosevelt signed in 1935.

— The Washington Post's The Fact Checker cites some of the same problems as FactCheck highlighted. And it points to this statement from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada: "We learned that he [Mitt Romney] pays a lower tax rate than middle-class families."

The Fact Checker writes that:

"For all the rhetoric about high taxes in the United States, most Americans pay a relatively small percentage of their income in taxes. Romney had an effective rate of 13.9 percent in 2010 and 15.4 percent in 2011. That gives him a higher rate than 80 percent of taxpayers if only taxes on a tax return are counted and puts him just about in the middle of all taxpayers if payroll taxes paid by employers are included."

— PolitiFact appears to have just begun its analysis. In its initial take on the night's talk, it gives Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick a "half true" rating for his statement about the state being "47th in the nation in job creation" when Romney left office there.

As for first lady Michelle Obama's address to the convention, the fact checkers don't seem to have any faults to find.

One of the problems I had with Michele Obama's speech was her talking about how poor her and Barrack were. They both went to expensive private high schools and Harvard Law School. Now I'm sure she isn't the only one who embelished their younger days (Romney using an ironing board for a desk), but this seems to be a theme from both conventions. The other thing is talking about Barrack not worrying about anyone's party affiliation. I believe he has proved to be the exact opposite. Regardless, her delivery was flawless and made just a rather plain speech into something very special.

I thought her speech went rather well, but the issue I have is this...

Both Michelle Obama's and Ann Romney's speeches were designed to introduce the public to the personal side of their husbands...

But Romney's side NEEDS to do that since the personal side of Romney is NOT known to the public, while Obama's personal side has been pushed down our throats for the last 4 years...

So Ann's speech was written for 2012, while Michelle's was a rehash of 2008...

...which is why they went "there"...Their strategy is to say "Let's pretend it's 2008 again when Obama was virtually unknown and we can create an image instead of looking at a record!"...

But there IS a record now...one that's desperately being thrown behind the curtain next to the man you're not supposed to be paying attention to...

A re-introduction, a refresher course on the man who is president, easy stuff really.

"Act" being the operative verb. Is she proud of the country today?

It's hilarious when you extremist right wingers go on the attack accusing the President of " Spending Peoples Money".. when you know for a fact the President doesn't have the power to spend Money. If anyone in Washington is spending money that you claim belongs to the tax payers it's the Republican controlled House of Representatives.

Great. Glad you finally give the republicans credit for the budget/spending in the 1990s instead of President Clinton since you now admit he had no power over the spending.

you're reading too much into it,, I never said that.

First you are forgetting that Democrats controlled the budget and spending in Clinton's first term. They voted with their President and passed the balanced budget act of 1993.. which raised taxes on the upper income levels and reduced defense spending even further than Bush 1 had gone.

Then in the 96 election cycle the Republicans took over the Congress and pretty much kept the same spending until 1997 when they passed another balanced budget deal. It should be noted that the budget would have balanced without this legislation because it was the increased revenues and lower spending of the Democrats that actually led to the balanced budget.

We can also give the Republicans FULL credit for the massive spending that took place between 2001 and 2006. All of Bush's big credit card spending sprees were allowed by a republican congress. Then in 2006 you can begin to blame some of it on the Democrats because they took back control of the purse strings. so from 2006 to 2010 we'll give the Democrats credit.

But keeping to our point.. in 2010 the Republicans once again took control of the house and have the capability to stop the spending that you right wingers claim is going on right now. They don't even attempt to stop the spending do they. So tell me this.. If they won't pass President Obama's Budget, and they won't go along with any of his Ideas to cut spending , then how on earth can anyone say with a straight face that Obama is spending away our future?....
