Anti-Obama documentary may gross $6 million this weekend - latimes.com
August 24, 2012

Quote:
The anti-President Obama documentary "2016: Obama's America," is off to a strong start in its first weekend of national release and could gross more than $6 million between Friday and Sunday, placing it far ahead of the new horror movie "The Apparition" and in a virtual dead heat with the new action comedy "Hit & Run."

Preliminary box office estimates show that "Obama's America," which is based on conservative author Dinesh D'Souza's book "The Roots of Obama's Rage" and suggests the president is an anti-American socialist, could do as well as, or even better than, the premiere of "Premium Rush," which is on track for an estimated weekend haul of $6.2 million. D'Souza also co-wrote and hosts the movie.

"We're going to have a great weekend," said Rod Rodgers, a partner in the independent film's distributor, Rocky Mountain Pictures. "And there are still a lot of areas that are demanding the picture."

The movie is performing strongly across the nation, but is doing solid business in cities presumed to be liberal strongholds, including Portland, Ore., and New York City.

D’Souza says the popularity of the film has confirmed the suspicion of many that the media is in cahoots with the Obama administration.
“There is a real hunger for information about Obama and a sense that information is not being covered or, in some cases, even being withheld,” he said. “There is a sense that there are elements of the media that are protective of Obama, that they would rather block a story that is embarassing about Obama than let the American public decide.”
Case in point, according to D’Souza? The film’s look at Obama’s half brother, George.
“Under normal circumstances, if the centerpiece of a president’s campaign is helping the disadvantaged and we are our brother’s keeper, the idea that this same guy has an actual brother living in third-world poverty without any help from Obama, this would have been on the cover of The New York Times. But none of them are touching it,” D’Souza said. “This is a vindication of what people fear, which is that there is an embargo on relevant information.”

Ticketing service Fandango reports that as of 3:00 p.m. today, Obama’s America accounts for 35 percent of all daily ticket sales, over three times as many as the next best-selling film, The Expendables 2, which accounts for 10 percent of sales.

The political documentary’s massive groundswell in interest is great news for Rocky Mountain Pictures, whose biggest hit to date is the $12 million-earning Christian missionary film End of the Spear. 2016 should pass that film’s total easily in the next few weeks.
I love it! It's like people are starting to get it! The Mainstream Press played the public for fools "for their own good," and Obama's disastrous administration is the result.

You know when I saw this, I realized that it's a pretty good day after all!

Does anyone remember the LA Times or POLITICO (or any other mainstream media outlet , for that matter) starting an article with "The anti-President Bush documentary "Fahrenheit 911"?...

Of course you don't...

You've read "The CONTROVERSIAL FILM "Fahrenheit 911"... or "Michael Moore's NEW MOVIE"..." or "The DOCUMENTARY "Fahrenheit 911"...

But "The anti-president Bush documentary"???...

That would frame the work as "partisan"...which is what they're doing here...

Now I have no doubt it is, but (once again), no consistency in the MSM (Kudos to EW...Not really MSM, but broke the trend nonetheless )...

Liberal stuff is "controversial"...Conservative stuff is "ANTI-"...

What is amazing is that it opened in a limited amount of theaters, far fewer than The Expendables and is doing so well.

Conservatives here have pointed out many, many times that the media is in cahoots with the obama administration to the hoots and catcalls of the lefties. Those hard core lefties will never believe it even when presented to them in a form of a movie.

The good news is their tactics are no longer working. They will keep trying but the mainstream media is losing control, and audience.

I saw 2016 yesterday .........It didn't tell me much I didn't already know. The only new thing for me is that it put a timeline to Obama's communist political affiliations. Honest liberals(if there is such a thing) and the alleged undecided voters are the ones who need to see it.

Looks like a right-wing version of something Michael Moore would put out.

From Wiki:

Quote:
Reviews

The film received mixed to positive reviews from film critics. As of August 26, 2012, the film has a 63% rating at aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes based on eight reviews. As of August 26, 2012, the film has a 51 percent rating at review aggregator website Metacritic based on 4 ratings, indicating "mixed or average reviews". The Washington Post, Michael O’Sullivan described the movie as a "slick infomercial...destined to irritate the president’s supporters while mobilizing his detractors, even as it is doomed to win precious few converts", while also criticizing D'Souza for "fear-mongering of the worst kind". Variety's film critic Joe Leydon critiqued the film, writing that "for the bulk of its running time, the pic comes off as a cavalcade of conspiracy theories, psycho-politico conjectures and incendiary labeling." In the New York Times, Andy Webster notes "Mr. D’Souza stumbles when interviewing George Obama, the president’s half-brother, an activist who voluntarily lives amid squalor in Nairobi, Kenya. 'Obama has not done anything to help you', Mr. D’Souza goads George Obama. “He’s taking care of me; I’m part of the world,” George Obama replies." .

The film was widely praised by conservative political commentators. For example, Conservative columnist John Fund of the National Review wrote that "D’Souza obviously wants his film to be taken seriously, and it deserves to be." He praised the production and feels that the film will appeal to conservatives as well as independents who are unsure of Obama. Writing for breitbart.com, Christian Toto also praised the production quality of the film, stating that "It's rare to see unabashedly right of center films, and when they arrive they typically reveal their modest budgets in every scene. '2016' is different." He described the film as "clearly a conservative's effort to explain the president's actions while cautioning against a future in which Obama is unchecked by political reckoning."

Here is a bit on the subject, from NewsMax:

Quote:
The anti-Obama documentary based on Dinesh D’Souza’s book “The Roots of Obama’s Rage” expanded nationwide on Friday — with early first-place showings in the domestic box office rankings, Deadline Hollywood reports.

As of late Friday afternoon, “2016: Obama's America” had grossed $700,000 from 1,090 theaters. That compared with $300,000 for the new big-budget, Sylvester Stallone action flick “The Expendables 2,” which is playing in 3,355 theaters, Deadline Hollywood reports.

The early showing puts Obama’s America on track to gross $1.2 million to $1.7 million on Friday alone, with as much as $3.7 million to $5 this weekend, according to Deadline Hollywood. Its afternoon ranking will likely be eclipsed by “Expendables” and several new releases, including “Ride Like Hell,” starring Michael Shannon.

Probably because 2016 is bbased on actual resarch and not just made up out of lies and wholecloth like Moore the Hutt's work.

People sometimes forget that the original Citizen's United court battle was not about creating Super Pacs. It was about the right to do a right wing political documentary.

There was a time the left owned the political documentary. You could pick the best documentary film at the oscars without seeing them. All you had to do was pick the one whose story line appeared to appeal best to Progressive sensibilities at the time.

Citizen's United won, and 2016 is not the only right wing documentary out this year. It's just the one that clicked best so far.

Here's some others. The last line of the first one says it all.
