Congress hits bottom: Only 10 percent approve

Quote:
That thud you just heard was the sound of Congress hitting an all-time low approval rating – again.

Gallup said Thursday that a mere 10 percent of Americans think members of Congress are doing a good job – the same approval rating from February of this year, which was the lowest in Gallup’s history.

And their disdain for Capitol Hill is one thing that Democrats, Republicans and independent voters can agree on. Low approval marks for Congress were consistent among party affiliation – with Democrats giving a 9 percent rating, Republicans 10 percent and independents 11 percent.

“It is difficult to pinpoint precise causes for these extraordinarily negative views, although the continuing poor economy is certainly a major factor,” pollster Frank Newport wrote in the analysis. “The fact that control of Congress is now divided, with a Republican majority in the House and a Democratic majority in the Senate, may provide an opportunity for Americans of all political persuasions to dislike some aspect of Congress.”

The 112th Congress has consistently registered low approval ratings, according to Gallup. The highest mark came in May 2011, when 24 percent of Americans gave a thumbs-up to Congress.

Other surveys during this Congress have shown even worse numbers. A New York Times/CBS News poll conducted in October found that Congress earned a 9 percent public approval rating.

Tuesday’s poll surveyed 1,012 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

A 10% approval rating and 80-90% of them will get re-elected in the next election.

This is why I think there should be term limits for all politicians.

"Well, my congressman is in my party so that's good enough... or something.", or whatever the excuse if for not tossing them out into the street.

I, for one, would lose no sleep over losing the so-called legislative leadership in both parties and some of the more special children who somehow get voted in, and again, again, and again...

Easier said than done. For some reason, Americans seem hell-bent on electing the same problems over and over.

We need a refreshing change. Badly.

I believe we talked about this before and as mad as people are with congress as a whole they still like their own congresscritter, so nothing changes from election to election.

Polling Congress as a whole is a sham...

If they ever asked "WHY" and listed "I love MY party in Congress, but the OTHER party sucks!", you'll get that as the reason for about 90% of the people surveyed...

Don't complain, mine is Debbie Wasserman-Schultz - sheesh. They have been running this Congressional poll since the mid 1960's to my knowledge, and Congress never seems to break a 25% approval rating with the American public. Strangely, however, when the poll question is whether you approve of your individual Congressman or woman, 90% of the American public says they approve - go figure? Must be talking to the same people who agree that it costs 2.7 cents to mint each individual penny, but doesn't want the penny eliminated from our currency, even though 99% of the pennies minted in our history, never are circulated back to the government. They end up in jars, car consoles, piggy banks, under seat cushions, etc.

Some think-tank also documents every word spoken by every member of Congress in public, each year, puts it into some computer algorithm, and it calculates the intelligence level our Congress speaks at. Last year, all members of Congress collectively, spoke at a high school 10th grade level, this year it dropped down to a 9th grade high school level.

Not to worry, the same system was somehow applied to a representative number of American's, supposed to be "average" voters. The population speaks at a 7th grade mentality level, so - Congress is apparently safe. Love the congresscritter crack. Sounds like Mr.Liberty is from Georgia or South Carolina - they use that term critters there. If he had said congressvarmint , probably from Tennessee or Kentucky, LOL.

I agree with the statement made in the OP..."the continuing poor economy is certainly a major factor". I'm sure there are other factors for this record low approval. People want to hold "someone" accountable for the spending as long as it's not a member from their own party...
