Wow!...This is gonna leave a mark...

Say It Ain't So, Joe

Quote:
It's not news that Sen. Joe Lieberman, the onetime Democratic VP candidate, is backing John McCain for President. Nor is it news that Lieberman takes a different view of the Iraq War than most Democrats. But what he said this morning on ABC's "This Week" is certainly news.

Quote:
Well, I say that the Democratic Party changed. The Democratic Party today was not the party it was in 2000. It's not the Bill Clinton-Al Gore party, which was strong internationalists, strong on defense, pro-trade, pro-reform in our domestic government. It's been effectively taken over by a small group on the left of the party that is protectionist, isolationist and basically will --and very, very hyperpartisan. So it pains me. I'm a Democrat who came to the party in the era of President John F. Kennedy. It's a strange turn of the road when I find among the candidates running this year that the one, in my opinion, closest to the Kennedy legacy, the John F. Kennedy legacy, is John S. McCain.
That's some hard-hitting stuff...

If you know me, you'll know I pretty much agree with what was said, but the fact he actually said it astounds me...

He still caucauses with the Democrats in the Senate and votes with them on most, if not all, non-foreign policy legislation...

I don't know if this is an attempt at VP or not, but this sure as hell sounds like he's taking off his glove and slapping some faces with it...

You know, I think the biggest change in American history will be if we elect McCain to the whitehouse. He's not a water boy to the religious right or a person who believes in big government.

My angle is this...

If McCain wins, the liberals get a little bit of a win, too, but if Hillary or Obama wins, the conservatives get nothing...

McCain would end up being more of a uniter, whereas Hillary or Obama would be more polarizing...

re: cnredd's post: McCain the uniter

I don't know about that. I can see some recount requests if McCain wins. There are so many people sure the Democrats are going to win. But it's hard to tell about the people who do the talking. If they are even going to vote or not. There's a massive get-out-the-vote campaign from Obama's campaign. If he gets Richards who will surely motivate a lot of Democrats-Hispanic and non alike- due to his experience and seeming sensibility, it will be hard to beat. I couldn't believe there would ever be as close an election as the Bush/Gore, in modern times, but hold the phone...it might just happen again!

I like Joe but I'm still a little cautious about supporting McCain. It is difficult if not impossible to really be sure exactly where McCain stands.Like many "politicians" he tests the political winds and where he can compromise,he does just that.He was for Amnesty before he was against it.He was against water boarding before he was for it. I could go on but we all get the picture. It is difficult to know what any POTUS will do once elected. That said,I think if elected,McCain will spend a good deal of his time trying to convince conservatives that he is one of them as opposed to striving for real unity with the other side of the isle.

I hope he will lead the nation, which mostly consists of a combination of conservative/liberal/libertarian. I hope if he gets elected it is by an overwhelming majority so he can have a mandate. (I have other fantasies, but they are also boring).

McCain is still enjoying the "honeymoon" and building a force field around himself. He knows that his opponents are for the time being..distracted.When they finally turn their attention towards him, they will do everything they can to penetrate that force field. This will be a close election, there will be no mandate.

The sad part is that I don't know if you mean the Democratic party or the media...

Good one!
It's a shame all the sensationalism the main news organizations participate in. I listen to a few minutes of it and it repeats repeats like they are trying to brain wash me to care about the color of senator Chumpchange's underwear like they want me to care about ring around the collar.
