Default "Stop these abortions.”

Beautiful Obama quote at the end...

"Stop these abortions.”

Quote:
Out in western Pennsylvania, the issue of abortion can strike a nerve. Democrats there often describe themselves economic liberals and social conservatives who favor gun rights and oppose abortion rights.

So, it was not unusual to see a woman stand near the end of Barack Obama’s town hall meeting in Johnstown, Penn., and offer a hurried, passionate plea for him to "stop these abortions."

The ability of politicians like Obama to thread the needle between their own support of abortion rights and their constituents' opposition can be deteminative in Pennsylvania. And Obama, who supports abortion rights, handled the questioner deftly.

"This is a very difficult issue, and I understand sort of the passions on both sides of the issue," he said. "I have two precious daughters — they are miracles."

But politicians must trust women to make the right decisions for themselves, he said.

"This is an example where good people can disagree," the Illinois senator said. "The question then is, are there areas that we can agree to that everybody can get behind? We can all agree that we want to reduce teen pregnancies. We can all agree that we want to make sure that adoption is a viable option."

The exchange appeared to be prompted by Obama's earlier comments that he does not favor abstinence-only education, but rather comprehensive sexual education that includes information on abstinence and birth control.

"Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old," he said. "I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn't make sense to not give them information."
Punished?!?!?!...Oh really?...

remember that folks...the next time someone tells you they're preganant...Don't say "Congratulations"...

Ask them first..."Is this what you wanted or are you being punished for your mistake?"...

I also noticed in the paragraph above that Obama is not in favor of abstinance only education...

Well what if the happy, totally informed adolesents take every precaution known to man and still get "punished"?...

Was that a "mistake" too, Obama?...

It sounds like Obama is with the crowd that views pregnancy as an illness and a punishment...

If you're 16 years old, a baby is a life-ruiner.

Interesting enough, there was once a time when 16 was the "average" age for starting a family. Anyway..an early pregnancy can be a challenge and some rise to meet the challenge.Others have become accustomed to a disposable society and become desensitised to taking life.

Yes, back when education and careers weren't important, yes, you're right, there was a time like that once.

There were careers back then and time was even more important then.Still it boils down to a question of priorities, many people give up their career to raise a child. They believe they are responsible for the pre-born child. Others believe the kid just gets in the way..

Some of the most successful people I know began their career in their mid 40's after raising several children.

I agree...It HAS ruined potential careers and education and can ultimately leave the mother with no time and money...

But that is what is called "consequences"...NOT "punishment"...

"punishment" is when someone intentionally does something to you, not simply the results of your actions...

You don't get punished when you put your hand over an open flame...you get a consequence...

I doubt very much Redd, that you lack the intellect to understand the statement for what it obviously is in context. Taking a complex situation and attempting to simplify it through manipulation of comments is beneath you, and I hope you know it.

The man is discussing his family, and how he might deal with his personal choice. To extrapolate personal life into the far more complex societal direction an elected official must follow is rather silly, and intellectually dishonest. If we took this stance for our current President, it would not be pretty, and would be obviously biased...so we don't.

I'm simplifying it??!?!?!...

A Senator calls the deliberate actions of a woman having sex and getting pregnant "a mistake" and you say that "I" am simplifying it?...

Please...

He was NOT just discussing "his family"...

Who's he fooling?...

When the hell can "we all agree" on that?...

And if you think that he was just talking about his family, then you'd be trying to tell me that he feels that HIS KIDS would be "punished", but nobody else's would be...

I feel that most women did not have careers or educations. There was the time when Suzy Homemaker stayed in the house and took care of the kids... while Daddy Warbucks raised the money...

That would be when abortion was illegal and people just went about getting them a more harmful way. If it were possible to get statistics, I would be willing to bet there are no more abortions today then there were 60 years ago... today they are just safe and legal.
