At the end of the day, the differences may not amount to much in the general election race -- if they hold, they may even cancel each other out. Catholics overall were split 46-46 between Obama and Romney.

If anything, as Gallup points out, the numbers underscore the fact that there is no such thing anymore as a typical Catholic voter.

"Catholics constitute almost one in four voters in the U.S. today, making their vote an important target of the Obama and the Romney election campaigns," Gallup editor Frank Newport writes in his analysis. "However, although Catholics as a whole are almost precisely average in their vote choices at this point in the campaign, there are major differences by the ethnicity and religiosity of Catholics that underscore the difficulty of typifying and subsequently targeting an 'average' Catholic voter."

Once again, Politico massages their master's back and refrains from telling you the bad news for Obama...known as "the truth"...

Obama and Romney are split 46/46?...Wow!...That sounds like a dead heat!...

But the lie of omission from Politico is that Obama won Catholics in the 2008 election by a split of 54/45...

In other words, since the last presidential election, Obama went from a 9 point LEAD when it comes to Catholics to being DEAD EVEN...

"Obama LOSES a 9 point lead!!!!" should be the headline...

Correct,Obama is losing support among Catholics.

As the article suggests there are many groups under the heading Catholic today. And with Hispanics I don't think they see Romney as potentially beneficial to their concerns.

Yup but the church seems to be gaining support from Latino's. Some of the inner city churches that were closed down due to "white flight" have reopened and have thriving congregations. Another change that I've noticed over the past 20 years is that "many" Catholics do their own thing and pay little attention to the hierarchy in Rome.
