Julie Farby - AHN News Writer

Washington, DC (AHN)-Several polls leading into Saturday's South Carolina Republican primary elections show Sen. John McCain enjoying a narrow lead over his rivals, including Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney.

McCain, who lost South Carolina in 2000 to President Bush, is hoping this time around will prove to be different from the last election. A win for McCain would be a key boost to his campaign after narrow losses to Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney in Iowa and Michigan, respectively.

According to a new McClatchy-MSNBC poll, with 27% of the vote McCain holds a slim lead over his rival GOP candidates. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee trails McCain with 25%, followed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, 15%, Fred Thompson, 13%, Ron Paul, 6%, and Rudy Giuliani, 5%.

In a separate poll, conducted by Zogby International, the numbers were slightly different but the outcome similar. In the Zogby poll of 814 likely GOP primary voters, McCain remained in front of the GOP pack with 27% of the vote, followed by Huckabee, 22%; Romney, 15%; Thompson, 13%; Paul, 4%; and Giuliani, 2%.

While both Nevada and South Carolina are holding their primaries on the same day, South Carolina is considered the more pivotal state of the two, with candidates focusing much of their campaign time and energy on winning the important southern state.

"South Carolina is the much, much bigger deal of the two," says Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "South Carolina epitomizes the Sun Belt. South Carolina is one of the most Republican states in the country," he adds.
We kind of knew he had a good chance at S.C., but the funny thing is, no real conservative likes McCain as a candidate. The democrats kind of like him, but this year they're not going to pass up a chance to make history by electing a woman or an African American.

Why oh WHY won't his own people back a guy who maybe could have won last time around if they hadn't been so dead set on electing George Bush?!
Why aren't the republicans more diverse?

Many conservatives feel betrayed by McCain on the amnesty AKA pathway to citizanship proposals.McCain is also considered a maverick by many conservatives, they think he can be unpredictable. It looks like McCain will take S.C. but he will run into trouble in the other primaries. Rudy is now doing poorly due to his so called "national strategy".. Mitt has already left S.C. and he is pinning his hopes on Nevada.Ultimatly..I think the GOP race will come down to a battle between Romney and Huckabee. Romney is far from out of it but he must keep his momentum going. He cannot afford to lose S.C. and Nevada,if he does,he will be crippled.

I think Romney will win Utah, Idaho and maybe Oregon due to the amount of Mormons here.
He needs those big delegate states though.
Huckabee is seen as a straight shooter and that's something conservatives like.
It appears, though, that the party wants to endorse Romney or Guliani and the Devil take the hind most.
If Guliani did pull ahead somehow, I don't think he would win in a general election against Hillary Clinton. My judgment is reserved for the time being on who could or could not beat Obama.

I'm not ready to count Guliani out but he is on his way out.

Yeah...

There's a chance his strategy will work, but I just don't see it right now...
