Huckabee, Obama carry momentum into New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (CNN) -- The newly-minted front-runners arrived in New Hampshire early Friday, hoping to take advantage of momentum created by their wins in Thursday night's Iowa caucuses.

Results out of the Iowa caucuses saw the emergence of two new front-runners -- Republican Mike Huckabee and Democrat Barack Obama -- and showed that the message of change resonated with voters in both parties.

The test of whether the front-runners can carry the momentum will come quickly, as the New Hampshire primaries are only five days away on January 8.

Over the past 30 years, winners in Iowa have won the New Hampshire primaries less than half the time.

No other candidate may have gained more momentum than Mike Huckabee, who won the support of 34 percent of Republican caucus-goers. The former Arkansas governor beat Mitt Romney, who came in second with 25 percent and who had been the front-runner in Iowa for months before Huckabee's surge in the polls.

Spencer's prediction..Obama and McCain will prevail but I'm a little worried about McCain, some conservatives did not like his support for amnesty and his opposition to tax cuts. Time will tell..

Yes it looks good for McCain. But, looks to me like people picked the most unlikely (at least Republican) candidate because they were tired of he same old rhetoric. They've rejected McCain before. Of course Nixon won after losing in the general election to Kennedy.
Interesting times to say the least!

Life is full of mystery...I once supported McCain before supporting him was cool. I do not understand this support for McCain in NH after he supported amnesty AKA Pathway to citizenship. McCain would be my last choice,he also voted against the Bush tax cuts and opposed Bush in the WoT in the early stages. One has to ask the question..John McCain, who are you? I really want to know..

One might ask similar questions about Huckabee. He's not your window store conservative. But there is something about him I am attracted to. He looks honest for one thing. Even if he weren't a minister. He just comes off as genuine. I'm sure this helps his chances with other voters too.

By the way, I heard Bloomberg won't enter the race now because he wouldn't want to be accused of standing in the way of the first black president.

Huckabee has had years of public speaking practice from the pulpit.I don't mean that in the derogatory sense,it's just a fact.He is "comfortable" in his own skin. I don't dislike Huck but I have this "quirk" about voting for an "ordained" minister,it's my problem not his! My reasons are personal and I will not explain them to anyone. If God leads me to vote for Huck, and I doub't that he will,I "could" vote for him but it would be against my better judgement.I'm still in the "undecided" camp. In '04..I was still undecided on my way to the polls.. At the very last minute,I voted for Gore. When you are fiscally conservative but socially liberal, making that all important decision does not always come easily..

Republicans usually nominate the heir-apparent. McCain was it in 2000 but the repubs went out of order & some have been dismayed by nominating & electing someone they knew so little about other than his last name. This nomination may try to set that right.

McCain, whether you like his compromises or not, has shown the ability to cross the aisle & get things done. He doesn't give grand promises & ideas that are nothing more than pipe dreams. He & Thompson are realists. Thompson might be too little too late but McCain has real shot at being the voice of reason that isn't likely to be accused of being a partisan hack. While not everyone will agree with everything the man says or does one would have to agree that he carries a certain amount of respect from both major political parties as well as independents.

Yup...

Unfortunately, with the way elections are set up today, each candidate has to first prove how close they are to the base of the party, and if/when they get the nomination, they then have to do a 180 and prove how close they are to the middle...

McCain has the latter down pat, but has no shot at the former...
