Press in Tow, McCain’s Challenger Demands Debates

Quote:
PHOENIX – In terms of “major” as United States Senate candidate J. D. Hayworth billed his announcement here outside the McCain 2010 headquarters, let’s give it a feh. But as political theater goes, it wasn’t bad.

Mr. Hayworth, whose challenge to Mr. McCain is now one of the more closely watched primary contests in the country, strolled into the senior senator’s campaign office Thursday morning and handed the receptionist a letter requesting that Mr. McCain join him for debates or town hall meetings across the state between now and the August contest, a press gaggle on his heels.

“Did you want to leave your contact information?” asked the receptionist, Sarah Beattie, after Mr. Hayworth plunked his package on her desk. “I believe it’s on there,” Mr. Hayworth replied.

Mr. McCain was in Washington dealing with the health care summit, so he could not immediately reply. “Schedules are difficult to coordinate,” Mr. Hayworth conceded.

The former sportscaster turned congressman turned conservative radio host turned U.S. Senate challenger then walked across the street to greet about 30 supporters waiting for him in a parking lot, many of them holding signs like, “The best in the west is J.D.”

Mr. Hayworth, who is positioning himself as the conservative choice to Mr. McCain, has called for multiple debates before. he said.

He was repeatedly asked about a measure approved by nearly half of the state lawmakers here Tuesday that would require presidential candidates who want to appear on the ballot in Arizona to submit documents proving their origin of birth. The bill would require the secretary of state to review candidates’ documents and deem them eligible to run.

Mr. Hayworth has raised questions about Mr. Obama’s citizenship in the recent past, something that Senator McCain has knocked him on, but Thursday distanced himself somewhat from the issue. Saying that the Arizona bill was “too narrowly drawn” because it should extend toward all candidates running for office in the state, Mr. Hayworth called pondering the matter of President Obama’s birthplace “a waste of time.” He added, “I consider this matter closed,” but would not say directly if he believes the president was in fact born in the United States.

“Former Congressman Hayworth’s desperate publicity stunt today re-emphasizes what this race is all about,” said Brian Rogers, the spokesman for the campaign, in a prepared statement. “Who will be most effective for Arizonans in the U.S. Senate. While Senator McCain is today leading the fight on behalf of Arizonans to stop the government takeover of our health care system, Mr. Hayworth held a press conference in our campaign parking lot.”
