Then you're making my point 2.

It's harder if you are "Black" perhaps, but not because of your skin color. And it's harder if you are a woman, it's harder if you are poor, it's harder if you are transgender, it's harder if you are fat or short or just plain ugly. At what point do we make it so easy to be successful, that no one is ever recognized in any way for their success?

Because it is no big deal.

Or, is that the point of it.

There are a million reasons any one can find for why they fail. Their is only one way to succeed. Earn it.

A good example would be Chelsea Clinton. Thread after thread berates her awards for participation in world of the elites. A better one would be Dr. Ben Carson, and his brother, who actually came from poverty to success because of their mom's morality, work ethic, and pride.

Pray tell, share your witty prose with all of us about Houston Furniture and how it applies to "reparations." I am both baffled and intrigued by the prospect.
Basically had a salesman (who worked on commission) who was black; while he was away checking on something for us, the store manager came over wringing his hands apologetically over us being shown furniture by "that boy"; informing me and my husband that as soon as one was free they would send over a "white salesman" to finish taking care of us.
Upon his return we told the salesman about it, and we left the store immediately.
Before this encounter I really did not know this kind of stuff went on. I now believe in affirmative action in hiring and on the job.

What you describe is deplorable, and far too common for it to be remembered as something significate for me to have "remembered" as you indicated. Nor has it anything to do with Reparations for our former economic model having enslaved someone's great-great grandparents.

To the point of the OP subject,,,; Affirmative action won't change the racist bad behavior of @ssholes. Any more than killing off most of a a generation of young men while destroying half the nation's assets paid the debt our Founders created when they capitulated to the Southern States at our nation's first creation. It is a debt that could not be paid then or now,,,; period. However, it was the crucible to which our Republic was tested. Some 150 years later, we are still here,,,; mostly.

There is a movie called "Lincoln" with Samuel Day Lewis. President Lincoln's dilemma with the White Elitist Land Owners of the south is historically accurate and disturbing. If you get a chance, I recommend to all that they should see it.

1 I answered comments about affirmative action.

without a decent pay day a person is still a slave to the machine

3 saw the movie

4 Lincoln was an original republican so... yeah... need... more of them...

What was that? 50 years ago? Or an unproven anecdote?

I've had truly bad service from blacks. I've had truly bad service from whites. In no case have I ever had a store manager apologize for bad service from someone they hired.

he wasn't apologizing for bad behavior, jimbo
he was apologizing that they had let a "boy" service us instead of a white person

As I said, I've never had that happen.

As with many things in life, you take what you have (or what you are handed, so to speak)and make the best of it.

Building block or stumbling block, CHOOSE.

This was a phrase used by a good friend of mine, when I was trying to clear some hurdles life threw at me. It has made all the difference in my life, and I've had some major hurdles to clear.

Too many people carry those stumbling blocks with them, some that were placed there by 'do-gooders' under the guise of 'helping them'.

People that wallow in their anger at something that happened to someone else, by people who are now dead, 150 years ago, in an environment that it was considered 'normal', will allow it to stop them from reaching their own potential as humans.

And that is very, very sad.
