Default Declines in Teen Pregnancy Risk Entirely Driven by Improved Contraceptive Use

Quote:
Improvements in contraceptive use have led to a drop in the risk of pregnancy among U.S. adolescents aged 15–19—and these changes also appear to be driving the recent declines in teen pregnancy rates, abortion rates and birthrates. A new analysis titled “Understanding the Decline in Adolescent Fertility in the United States, 2007–2012,” by Dr. Laura Lindberg and colleagues, estimated that improved contraceptive use accounted for the entire 28% decline in teen pregnancy risk between 2007 and 2012. The authors found significant increases in teens’ use of any contraceptive method, use of multiple methods and use of highly effective methods, as well as a decline in contraceptive nonuse.

“There was no significant change in adolescent sexual activity during this time period,” says lead author Dr. Lindberg. “Rather, our new data suggest that recent declines in teens’ risk of pregnancy—and in their pregnancy rates—are driven by increased contraceptive use.”

The authors relied on U.S. government data from the National Survey of Family Growth to estimate a pregnancy risk index (PRI) for 2007, 2009 and 2012. The PRI summarizes the risk of pregnancy among all adolescent women, estimating the influence of both changes in the level of recent sexual activity and changes in the level of contraceptive risk. The study found that if sexual activity was the only factor taken into account, the risk of pregnancy among adolescents would have increased slightly, by 6%. Instead, improvements in contraceptive use improved to such an extent that it not only drove the entire decline in teen pregnancy risk, but it also compensated for the 6% increase in risk due to sexual activity from 2007–2012. Hence, improvements in contraceptive use accounted for 106% of the teen pregnancy risk decline.

Teen pregnancy rates have dropped along with teen pregnancy risk. The U.S. teen pregnancy rate declined 25% from 2007 to 2011 (the most recent year for which data are available), and declines are apparent across all 50 states and all racial and ethnic groups, although disparities remain. The new findings extend previous research analyses of the PRI, which found that improvements in contraceptive use drove the majority of the decline in teen pregnancy rates between 1991 and 2007.

“Teens’ increased use of contraceptives indicates their increased commitment to protecting themselves from risk,” says Guttmacher director of public policy, Heather Boonstra. “Policy discussions should focus on supporting teen contraceptive use generally, including ensuring access to a full range of contraceptive education, counseling and methods.”

Some Republicans have a push for abstinence only education.
It's a bad idea that causes problems.
A full education on the topic leads to better results. Now that Bush and his fool-hardy push for abstinence only is out of the executive office, we're seeing the results.

The good thing is that teen pregnancies go down more after the girl is in her 20's.

Seriously, some young people will abstain from sex, because they value their sanity and their future.

Was this a claim you just made up on the spot?
Or do you have stats to back up this claim?

Cause the truth is abstinence only is what drives up STD rates.
How Abstinence-Only Sex Ed Is Driving Up STD Rates | TakePart
A 2012 study from the Guttmacher Institute found that more knowledge about sexual health and contraceptives was directly correlated to a decrease in adolescent and young adult risky sexual behaviors, like having sex without barriers or contraceptives, and increased numbers of sexual partners. The study showed that teens who received comprehensive sex ed not only had lower rates of pregnancy but waited longer to have sex—effectively achieving what abstinence-only educational programs have been trying to encourage for decades: waiting to have sex.

South Carolina, where this woman was raised and currently lives, is part of the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) grouping of states consistently boasting the highest rates of STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. The states with the highest STD rates are also those with largely abstinence-only programs. This is not a coincidence: Young people who receive only abstinence-only education tend to engage in riskier sexual health behaviors once becoming sexually active. Southern states report the highest percentage of students having had sexual intercourse prior to age 13; the highest percentage of students who have had intercourse with four or more partners; and the highest incidence of sexual activity without barriers or contraception.

All that translates, not surprisingly, into higher rates of STD infection.

I think some people have differing definitions of "abstinence". A person having any type of sex activity with another person, including kissing on the lips, is not engaging in abstinence.

back in the day it was a meme among us teen and young women, "good girls get pregnant,"
in other words promiscuous girls knew best how to avoid pregnancy. not always but way better than the once in a lifetime slip that changed you forever.

no, Virginia, human nature does not halt due to societal taboos

No, that's not what the study says at all. The analysis contradicts itself about half a dozen times if you actually take the time to read it.

Also, it's impossible to claim improved contraception is entirely responsible for a decline in teen pregnancy. In order for one to believe that nonsense, you'd have to say there were zero other factors; and we all know that's complete bs.

The study is a lame, partisan attempt to push contraceptives and claim they're the only way to prevent teen pregnancy.

The title doesn't appear to be backed up by the chart. The should have left out the word "entirely".
From 2009 to 2011 the chart shows a steepening in the decline of the pregnancy rate that corresponds with a decline in sexual activity.

While I believe it is important to teach teens about contraceptives, it is equally important to teach them that there is only one way to 100% avoid pregnancy and STD's.
