Successful students require good teachers, good schools, and good parents. You need all 3 but as usual it's only the teachers that get blamed.


All that aside though - I think the union picked the wrong time and the wrong issues to strike on - Chicago teachers have a good salary and tying increases to merit is the way of the future so suck it up union.

I do have a beef though with merit being tied only to test scores (unless I'm misreading things) - I don't think that is an adequate way to determine a good teacher nor is passing tests and adequate way to educate a young mind.

This is the only way to determine if they are successful. I'm not sure if you realize this, but teachers are now teaching to pass the test. No pass the test no graduate. This is where we have gone wrong IMO.

I disagree - I can't believe we can't come up with better means of evaluation, certainly we have it in higher education.

I do realize that and it's something I have a lot of issues with - it doesn't teach thinking or problem solving, or a number of things - it teaches how to pass a test.
