Default Too much education?

Do you feel that there is such a thing as too much education for a career? I had an interesting debate with my father over this. I plan on getting my Master's Degree while in the Coast Guard (with hopes of either going into local, state, or federal law enforcement in the future).

I figure coming out of the military with a Master's Degree will help me greatly in my search for employment, while my father thinks that being a 27-29 year old with a Master's would hurt my chances because I am "too educated" for someone of that age.

What are your thoughts?

You will have the knowledge and no one can take that away.
A masters degree in what?
Law Enforcement with a masters would enable you to run for sheriff with credibility. And be a warden? Or high ranking guard at a prison. (State of Texas goes by education =rank usually also they base rank on rank in the military. You might stress whichever is higher.
There are many career choices in law enforcement because most people only do the entry level and stop there or get bogged down trying to do school and the job.

If it's a business degree (if possible I would get a double major or a major /minor Law enforcement/business) you could be in a high administrative job in any field almost. Prisons, counties, run for mayor (after on the job experience blah blah), homeland security, run for judge if it's an elected position where you are. I know I'm leaving something out, but you are in a good field for an advanced degree, and better to do it while your mind and body are young.
The rest of your working life you will have the experience of these years to help you continue to make the proper choices and decisions, and your body will continue to be your friend. May I suggest upper body development (if you need it for control and tone) then take up golf. They probably have it as a credit course and along with running or whatever else you do it will keep that upper half of you at tip top shape while participating in a pleasant exercise that is also social.
mind, body, spirit.
Tell me, do I talk too much?
Good luck, I am excited for you.

Oh yeah probation and parole are options or if you want to make a shift in later years it's an option then.

No such thing as to much education......

You may end up being overqualified for some jobs, but in the long run it will help. Of course with that education and your career in the military you might become one of the evil 1% in this country.

It could be worse. Some people get a Ph.D., and their common phrase is, "Do you want fries with that?"

I am considering a Masters in Homeland Security though most likely I will go with Public Administration. I figure that will look great when I run for Sheriff. Or hell, I will get a Master's in both Public Admin and Homeland and run DHS how it should be run
