Default Davis High fined for soda sales violation

Big Nanny is dead serious when it comes to being Big Nanny...

Davis High fined for soda sales violation

Quote:
Davis High School has been fined $15,000 after they were caught selling soda pop during lunch hour, which is a violation of federal law.

The federally mandated law prohibits the sale of carbonated beverages after lunch is served. The program is an effort to help fight childhood obesity and to have young students make better food choices.

The mandate allows for carbonated beverages to be sold before lunch, but restricts students from buying lunch, then purchasing carbonated drinks afterward.

“Before lunch you can come and buy a carbonated beverage. You can take it into the cafeteria and eat your lunch, but you can’t first go buy school lunch then come out in the hallway and buy a drink,” said Davis High Principal Dee Burton.

Principal Burton said he does not understand the law with rules that seem to be contradictory.

“We can sell a Snickers bar, but can’t sell licorice. We can’t sell Swedish Fish, we can’t sell Starburst, we can’t sell Skittles, but we can sell ice cream, we can sell the Snickers bar, Milky Ways, all that stuff,” said Burton.

The school is bound to obey the law, however, if they want the $15,000 the federal government gives to subsidize their school lunch program.
And, of course, the government doesn't give a rat's ass that this ultimately hurts the students themselves...

Quote:
Burton said the money they will use to pay the fine was typically used to help pay for their music and arts department among other school activities.
So school activities suffer so the school can pay Uncle Slam...

Of course, the government inspectors that are getting paid by the taxpayer need to justify their existence like a cop having a status quo for traffic tickets, so they attack the schools and say "Look! I'm doing a good job!"...

They knew the law and did this to themselves. The parents should be outraged at the school. I agree wholeheartedly with efforts to end childhood obesity.

Then kindly limit your efforts to your kids, and leave other peoples' alone.

Myself, I wouldn't want a child warped by constantly being told that every simple pleasure in life is very bad for them.

If I were a parent I would not want the schools selling pop to my child. I think childhood obesity is a serious and lifelong issue and children don't have the self control and knowledge that adults do.

I imagine it's hard enough for parents to provide nutritious meals kids without being undermined at school.

We never had pop in school when I was in school

Kids are getting fat, IMO, because they've been taught that carbs, not proteins, should be the foundation of their diet.

In the end, it comes down to one main thing: energy, ie calories, and it doesn't matter what the source is.

Too many calories is too many calories. The difference is - some calories come with more beneficial perks such as fiber, vitamins, the ability to keep you full for longer or, the ability to make you hunger for more. But in the end it's still calories in vs calories burned and too many equals obesity.

The best dietary foundation is variety, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meats in moderate amounts

And exercise (sigh...)

It is the friggin parents responsibility to teach their children how to eat right, not nanny government. If you as a parent can't control your children it seems to me that is your fault not anyone else's.

I think parents get undermined. It's extremely difficult to control your childs eating habits outside of the home. It's something my parents, for example, never really had to deal with because our schools didn't sell that stuff.
