Congresswoman Proposes Ban on Corporal Punishment in U.S. Schools as Some Schools Move to Reinstate It | CNSnews.com
Quote:
(CNSNews.com) – Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday introduced a bill to end corporal punishment in all public and private schools that receive federal funding or services. But at least two school districts, one in Tennessee and one in Texas, want to reinstate corporal punishment on campuses described by one city councilman as “war zones.”
Personally I think this is horse ****. Parents have the option to opt out of corporal punishment in schools, so this bill in reality is designed to take the choice away from the parents not the schools. The people supporting this bill have been quoted saying that their ultimate goal is to outlaw spanking completely. That means you can no longer put your hand on your child for any reason at anytime if they get their way...

I have had kids in public and private schools for the past 20 years and NONE of them allowed paddling, so I don't see the issue.

The issue is that many schools do still use it and many parent due still want it. If you don't believe me just listen in to klbj news radio and listen to all the parents call in about it. Plus the supporters of this bill were on the morning show today and they said on the show that they plan to take it further, and try to outlaw spanking completely.

I personally have a problem with ANYONE trying to tell me what I can and cannot due with my child. That's what CPS is for, if someone is abusing their child CPS will step in.

Although it's allowed in some schools, I think it's rarely used at all, due mostly to societal changes and views on corporal punishment. I personally have no problem with using corporal punishment when it's called for, but I'm probably in the minority. What I do have a major problem with is taking the issue into the home and telling parents how to parent their own children.

I have a big issue with spanking in schools. If there's going to be spanking, it should be up to the PARENT to decide if and when it should happen.

There was corporal punishment in one of the elementary schools I went to and it was grossly misused. I was the victim of it's misuse once and my mother - a spanking proponent at home - was all sorts of pissed off about it when I came home and told her what happened. She marched down the school with me in tow and gave them a big ole piece of her mind. Her main issue? NO ONE and I mean NO ONE was to lay a hand on her child other than her or my father. And she told them that if they ever laid a hand on me again, she'd sue them.

I believe that's pretty much already the case for the most part.

These days that would be cause for a lawsuit. Parents have to actually sign a paper that has specific rules on corporal punishment. Like the parent can choose to be contacted before punishment is administered to be sure it's warranted. These days parents have the control, and it should be that way. I just know that some parent's like me believe it takes a village to raise a kid.

That's the ONLY way I would support it. But I've never seen it implemented in that manner. And it sure as **** wasn't implemented that way when I was in school
