Health Law Spurs Shift in Hours - Yahoo! Finance

Quote:
Some low-wage employers are moving toward hiring part-time workers instead of full-time ones to mitigate the health-care overhaul's requirement that large companies provide health insurance for full-time workers or pay a fee.
Quote:
The shift is one of the first significant steps by employers to avoid requirements under the health-care law, and whether the trend continues hinges on Tuesday's election results.
Quote:
"The tendency is to say, 'Let me fill this position with a 40-hour-a-week employee,' " said Mr. Russell. "I think we have to think differently."
some might conclude this is an unintended consequence.
but they'd be wrong.
we're getting exactly what those who supported the legislation want.
this is their plan --- they've been defending it for the past couple years.
and they want to do more of it.

So sad that the Democrats WANT a 3% unemployment rate when EVERYONE will be making minimum wage and working 25 hours a week...

Welcome to the Obama wishlist...a McJobs economy...The Left tried to bash Bush with this, but now it's a reality and they LOVE it...

Oh there are benefits for low wage workers to working part time for an employer that doesn't offer health care insurance as well. Federal premium support subsidies are far more generous than the worker can earn with a full work week. Thanks to Obamacare the choice becomes between working a full week and health care insurance freezing the low wage worker in place.

For middle income families where one parent earns most of the income Obamacare penalizes the family and encourages divorce. Take the example of a mother earning $45K working for an employer that offers employee only coverage while the spouse makes $12 working part time with no health insurance. If the Federal government determines the employer provided health insurance is "affordable" for the mother then the other members of her family become ineligible for Federal premium support.

Of course a divorce solves the Obamacare induced problem described above just like being unmarried "solved" the problem of poverty. Destroying families is not moving forward.

Why would people want that? Sounds like something needs adjusted not thrown out.

What do you think building box stores like staples and running smaller owner operated stores out of business does for the economy?

Improves it. Goods and services are more readily available at cheaper prices than the mom and pop stores.

Degrade quality

However, it's up to the consumer to determine what businesses stay in business.

Around here, many of us do our best to support local businesses. From the farmers to the artisans. We even have "flash mobs" for local businesses. Someone posts a day and a business and we "flash mob" them with our business that day. (though they haven't done one in a couple months now)

But that's up to US. The locals.

The wages at a staples store have a real low cieling. I agree it takes special effort to compete with a box store but it isn't just that. The big players dominate so much because of their size. I have seen communities bring in Walmart, give walmart 25 years tax free so they will build. Then they do and all the smaller operators go out of business. Occasionally if sales arent great Walmart will simply pull the plug and leave.
