Default Payoff for Efficient Cars Takes Years

The New York Times finally learns something we've telling them for years...

Payoff for Efficient Cars Takes Years

Quote:
Ed Moran’s new Toyota Prius was programmed by the dealer to make him feel good about his gas savings. A dashboard display compares the fuel consumption of the Prius and his 2001 Ford pickup truck.

“Every time I go to the store it will tell me how much money I saved,” said Mr. Moran, a horticulturist in Ames, Iowa.

Like more and more Americans, Mr. Moran is looking to a fuel-efficient car to help soften the financial blow of ever higher gas prices.

Shoppers have more options than ever to fight back, including hybrids, plug-ins, electric vehicles and “eco” or “super fuel economy” packages.

But opting for models that promise better mileage through new technologies does not necessarily save money, according to data compiled for The New York Times by TrueCar.com, an automotive research Web site.

Except for two hybrids, the Prius and Lincoln MKZ, and the diesel-powered Volkswagen Jetta TDI, the added cost of the fuel-efficient technologies is so high that it would take the average driver many years — in some cases more than a decade — to save money over comparable new models with conventional internal-combustion engines.

That is true at today’s pump prices, around $4, and also if gas were to climb to $5 a gallon, the data shows.

Gas would have to approach $8 a gallon before many of the cars could be expected to pay off in the six years an average person owns a car.
If you want to pay an extra $15K to go to sleep smug, go right ahead...But you're not fooling anyone but yourself...

You guys are so excited to find any negative story along this lines it
s really getting odd. Seriouslt though. If it costs almost $70 for a fill up how long does it take an electric car to pay for itself. 200 fill ups is $14,000. But keep hope alive you two. I am sure there is another negative story just around the corner. BTW I have a friend who drives a Tesla. Fasted car I ever drove and it's 100% electric. He says his electric bill went up $35 a month to keep it charged. Now, the price of the Tesla is over $100,000 but new technology is always more expensive. The prices will come down when those sorts of cars are available in mass. Point is the technology is here now.

If you can afford to spend $100K on a two seat sports car, then chances are you are indifferent to the cost of gasoline. Electric car technology has been around for more than a century but like the Tesla or the guvmnt motors Obamamobile er Volt it wasn't practical prior to the development of cars like the Prius.

BTW a new Prius modestly equipped is around $24K in California. It will average around 50MPG. With seating for 4 or 5 and cargo room, the Prius is a practical high efficiency car.

Did you read where I said this sort of technology is initially expensive? I didn't say that it was the answer right this minut. I said the technology works and the price will eventually come down. Why do you hate America?

Well let's just forget the whole damned energy efficiency thing. After all it's so Emo /jam-pantz/ now isn't it?
Let's just keep running everything off oil till there ain't any and maybe with no power tools by candle light we can manage to invent something that gets us down the road.
Why waste time on it now?

Seems like this is the thing that will make them happy. Drill until you ruin our water sources with fracking and cut those regulations. Suck it dry and never think about the next generation. The me generation is in charge.

We don't hate America, we hate being lied to...

Who lied to you? You need to get thicker skin. Support the electric car man. Support U.S. auto makers. Support Americans winning the alternative energy race with the Chinese. Support America man.
