OK I was upset they finally found the Titanic and found out who Jack the Ripper was. Will technology solve all my favorite mysteries? I don't know if I'm ready for this.

“It's rectangular. It certainly looks man-made. It's off the coast of North Africa. It's deep underwater. And it's on Google Maps. Could it be the ancient lost city of Atlantis? That's what Bernie Bamford, a British aeronautical engineer, wondered after he spotted an unusual pattern of rectangles on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, The Telegraph newspaper reports. About the size of Connecticut, the pattern looks an awful lot like an aerial grid map of a city.

Is the Lost City of Atlantis on Google Maps?

Quote:
A section of the ocean floor off of North Africa has a curiously man-made look to it. Check the site out on Google Maps. Here's an excerpt from The Telegraph report: “Atlantis experts said that the unexplained grid is located at one of the possible sites of the legendary island, which was described by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. According to his account, the city sank beneath the ocean after its residents made a failed effort to conquer Athens around 9000 B.C.

Dr Charles Orser, curator of historical archaeology at New York State University told The Sun that the find was fascinating and warranted further inspection. You can read more about the intriguing find at The Telegraph's website. Check out the Atlantis Wikipedia page for more info on the mythical city.”

Wow, that is REALLY interesting. I wonder if there will be any exploration of it...

I have never heard there is a definitive answer to who Jack the Ripper was....only narrowing it down to likely being a polish man....
What do you know salty? Do tell.

Don't know how far it is down but as technology advances I suspect someone will investigate further. Once we would have thought the Titanic and the Edmund Fitzgerald lost as far as recovery goes.

I don't know if you are familiar with Pat Cornwell's Book Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper - Case Closed ?
If not I suggest you refresh your memory by first reading the last book on the Ripper. I think the last one before Cornwall's was in 1989 . Then find a good book on The Torso Murders. THEN read the Cornwell book. You will see then that even though Hollywood tries to keep the "mystery" going (let's face it they have made tons off this legend) the DNA evidence presented is truly a case closed. And when you have time to dwell on this: where does a woman hater come from and what does he evolve into if never caught? It will sicken you, perhaps scare you but surely give you pause.

I don't know how deep it is there, but I can guarantee folks will be checking it out.

Btw, the Fitzgerald is diveable in open circuit scuba gear. But not the Titanic unfortunately, though obviously they've gotten submersibles down there.

The camp is split on Cornwell's book. A lot of Ripper experts consider it bunk.

As for the map, that is clearly the island from Lost.

Yes. Evidently a postage stamp and some clothing provided by the great nephew of the final suspect. And if you read in the order I suggested (I did this myself quite by accident. The new Cornwell book was on order for me and I decided to review the old conjectures so I checked out a good recent Ripper book and while I was at the library just picked up the Torso book cause I was in the mood for the macabre. Little did I know all three books would tie in so nicely!) You will have fun and I don't want to spoil it for you.

Your last line is cute
That's why I suggested she (Trinnity) read for herself. And why I made the comment Hollywood (and book publishers) won't let it die. If you do a concerned study on it per my guidelines you will (I think) have to come to the conclusion I did. Cornwell lays out the holes as well as the evidence. But really there are no holes as far as the DNA is concerned. The part about what he did later are conjecture, but this author has Virginia govt lab and Scotland Yard and basically whomever she chooses to study this because of her fame. She's a novel writer (except for this book and maybe 1 other) but all of her murder mysteries are based on different real life occurrences and evidence gathering. So I would give a lot of credence to her conjectures. But like I said the DNA evidence is overwhelming unless there was a twin involved.

I don't know what made me think the EF was formerly hard to get to except maybe the line in the song, "The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy...", but that could also have meant the bodies would never be recovered.

On topic here's an interesting map of the supposed Atlantean Empire

And here is Gibraltar (ancient "Pillars of Hercules". Plato said Atlantis was located in front of the Pillars of Hercules.

I suspect there will be a Nat'l Geographic special or other documentary soon.

It is hard to get to, no doubt. Five hundred foot dive is nothing to scoff at. But doable. People have actually bounced down to 1000+ft to set world records. ("bounce" = hitting a depth and immediately coming back up) I'm working on training for a dive
