Default Scientists Say Ancient Tsunami Hit NY

Quote:
May 4) -- A tsunami slammed into the New York and New Jersey region more than 2,000 years ago, according to scientists who say sedimentary deposits in the area back up that scenario

The theory, reported by BBC News, is undergoing some scrutiny to rule out other causes for what the scientists described as an upheaval along the Northeast coast in 300 B.C.
"If we're wrong, it was one heck of a storm," said Dr. Steven Goodbred, a scientist with Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
The cause of the tsunami is a subject of debate with some saying a landslide deep in the depths of the ocean was the trigger. But others point to an asteroid impact as the culprit.

Scientists take us for fools...and most of us fall for it...

This jerk is getting PAID to find information that means crap today...

I realized this recently when some guy from the University of Whatever said "many scientists believe that oceans will be around for the next 3 or 4 billion years, but I've created a model that shows they could be gone in the next 1.2 billion years."...

Ummm...

Don't you have a disease to cure or an innovation to invent, a-hole???????

It is downright STUPID to be giving these people grant money and tuition money so they can find out things that DON'T MEAN SH*T!...

People with 160 IQs that could be helping their fellow man in today's world instead spending their time learning things that, although interesting in the trivial sense, mean SQUATA in terms of relevance...

Doing it as a hobby would be one thing...Doing this as an occupation shows that the only fools bigger than them are the people that sign their checks...

It's all about "doom and gloom" science. If you an create a potential disaster, people will pay you big money to research ways to protect them from it. It doesn't matter if the threat is real or not, as long as people feel threatened, there's money available.

Yeah, we sure as heck wouldn't want to know that a tsunami wiped out a portion of NY/NJ 2,000 years ago... or especially what caused it so we could watch for a similar event and be prepared to evacuate people and save lives if necessary... heaven forbid

There was a book that was written almost 2,000 years ago that some would say also doesn't mean SH*T, but plenty of people make a living reading from that too...

I agree, whether or not our oceans will disappear in 3-4 or 1.2 billion years is pretty irrelevant... what happened 2,000 years ago and could be repeated now that 21 million people live in that are is maybe not so irrelevant? Dontcha think?!

Yes and that money comes from the taxpayers mostly. Studies that have no
value at all. To many to name. But for sure the ones who sign the checks are the biggist fools of all. And where do we find the largest collection of these fools? The government!

It's useless until a major event happens, then everyone looks at the government and asks "Why didn't you warn us".

Like the studies that show that NYC might end up underwater in a cat 3 hurricane, or the similar predictions for the LA area is a underwater landslide hits, or even the entire east coast if the Canary Island volcano on the other side on the world collapses...again.

Yes that is true... But I was thinking of the money wasted on the stupid things, like the number of parier dog hole made in an area, and things like that. I enjoy watching these big things on the national GEO, History or History International Channels, very informing. Like how once the plains wese a tropical sea. Or how NY was once part of Scotland etc., etc.

Yup...

I don't mind government money being used on science, but it has to be JUSTIFIED...

There are millions of scientists doing things right now that are 100% irrelevant to the future of mankind and mean absolutely nothing to anyone other than themselves...They should be cropped...

I enjoy them also...But enjoying them doesn't mean they're worth the billions sunk into them by our tax dollars...
