CBS News: The Mariana Trench: American diver Victor Vescovo breaks record with deepest submarine dive ever, finds plastic waste.

Quote:
An American diver broke the record for deepest submarine dive ever and found something disheartening at the bottom of the ocean a plastic bag. Victor Vescovo traveled seven miles down to the deepest part of the ocean, Mariana Trench in the Pacific, BBC News reports.

During his four-hour excursion, Vescovo spotted new sea creatures as well as a plastic bag and candy wrappers.

His team believes they discovered four new prawn-like species in total. They also saw a spoon worm, a pink snailfish, and a colored rocky outcrops, all inhabitants of the deep sea. In addition to the creatures, they discovered something that past expeditions have not: pollution. Humanity's impact had reached the deepest parts of the sea floor, too, the team realized.
too much over packaging like I've been saying. Damn it takes twenty minutes to open a purchased item sometimes.

The scientists plan on testing the creatures they collected to see if they contain microplastics. This is a widespread problem for sea creatures, even those living extremely deep in the ocean, a recent study has found.

"It is almost indescribable how excited all of us are about achieving what we just did," Vescovo told BBC News. "This submarine and its mother ship, along with its extraordinarily talented expedition team, took marine technology to a ridiculously higher new level by diving rapidly and repeatedly into the deepest, harshest, area of the ocean."

The team dove to the bottom of the Mariana Trench five times, BBC News reports. It was part of Vescovo's "Five Deeps expedition," his attempt to explore the deepest parts of all five oceans. Vescovo, a private equity investor, is funding the expeditions. Previously, he climbed the highest peaks on each of the planet's seven continents.

The first deep dive into the Mariana Trench was in 1960, when U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard ventured into the deep abyss of the Pacific Ocean.

In 2012, movie director James Cameron made a solo trip into the Mariana Trench.

The latest descent by Vescovo's team reached 35,849 feet beneath the waves, breaking the previous records by about 36 feet.

Vescovo has lead dives in the Atlantic's Puerto Rico Trench, the South Sandwich Trench and the Indian Ocean's Java Trench. Next, he will attempt to reach the bottom of the Arctic Ocean's Molloy Deep.
Bless his little heart.

I'll bet an examination of the plastic bag would reveal printing in Chinese. They are the biggest dumped of garbage into the ocean.

Coincidentally, I just saw a documentary about a dive where they found trash at the bottom of the Celebes Sea near Malaysia. Don't know if it was the same dive as the OP...

All of the trash was seated in one location...They surmised that IRRELEVANT of where the trash is dropped, currents will move them to this exact location where the currents settle and the trash drops down to the abyss...

So this trash could be from 20 miles, 200 miles, or 200 miles away...

And "yes", Japan and China are the largest culprits by a mile...

I live on a TVA (hydro generation) lake.

Every year, while the lake is down, we get to spend hours cleaning up the garbage that accumulates in our cove. Some could very well be an oops from boaters and something gets caught by the wind and off it goes, but some of it is obviously dumped.

Oil cans, gas cans, beach chairs, coolers, truck bed liners, cups, bags, bathing suits, condoms, radios, fast food bags, beer cans... the list goes on and on.

Unfortunately, I don't believe it can be blamed on the Chinese.... this is good old American garbage.

So this thread isn't about an American diving at record depths but that Americans should feel guilt about corrupting the Sea.

Typical.

I don't know if anyone else noticed but when 40cean first put out their ads, they didn't specify that the litter covered beach was not from the public spaces of the USA but FIJI!

Isn't Fiji where all the rich folks go for a getaway? I know this blue collar bast*d cannot afford to go litter the beaches there.

They later changed the opening to make that correction. "We went to Fiji on a surfing vacations...."

Kudos for their work but for goodness sake be honest.
https://4ocean.com/

Fiji is located in the South Pacific Ocean, about 1,700 miles east of Australia, 1,300 miles north of New Zealand and 3,100 miles south of Hawaii. Its geographic coordinates are 18 00 S, 175 00 E. Fiji is an archipelago of more than 300 islands, but only about 110 of the islands have permanent human occupation. It's closest continental neighbor is,,,,,"CHINA" Making it very unlikely that crap on the beach is from the USA.

The Marianna trench is nearby, again making the concept of deep ocean bottom trash a USA crime against nature there very unlikely.

All that said, it is a sad admission that so much of the planet is tainted by many humans who seem to have no respect for the home in which we all live.

The truck bed liner was in pretty good shape. Unfortunately, it wouldn't fit any trucks that we had at the time.

Pretty much anything that had been floating around in the lake, was in ruins. Somebody definitely was missing a very expensive pair of Ray Bans, and a couple of the coolers served duty for a while.

I thought you'd find a couple of things....Like Adam Schiff's evidence of Trump/Russia collusion...Mary Jo Kopeckne's shoes...

Around here water is delivered by a network of canals. During the winter sections of the network are dried up for maintenance and clean up. All kinds of trash and even cars are removed. It seems some people take pleasure in throwing rental bicycles and scooters into the canal destroying their internet connection hardware.
