If you have relatives in the area, they can go to their facebook and check off that they are safe and it will post publicly

present status:
Quote:
Hurricane Michael made landfall as a catastrophic, unprecedented Category 4 storm on the Florida Panhandle with a life-threatening storm surge and over 100 mph winds possible not just near the coast, but also inland that could leave some areas without power for over a week.

Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida, around 12:30 p.m. CDT with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph and a minimum pressure of 919 millibars.

updates in reverse order from earlier today back till 36 hrs ago:
Quote:
An extreme wind warning has been issued until 2:15 p.m. EDT for southern Jackson, Gulf, Bay, Calhoun, Liberty and southeastern Washington counties where winds in excess of 130 mph are moving onshore. This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation. Treat this warning as if a tornado was approaching and move immediately to the safe room in your shelter, advises the National Weather Service

Michael is currently centered about 5 miles northwest of Mexico Beach, Florida, and about 20 miles southeast of Panama City and is moving north-northeastward. Its central pressure continued to drop and maximum sustained winds continued to increase up to landfall, according to aircraft reconnaissance data.

Quote:
Water levels are quickly rising and a storm surge of more than 6.5 feet has already been reported at Apalachicola.

Rain has already moved into the Florida Panhandle with some locally heavy squalls. The eye of Michael can be clearly seen from the National Weather Service Doppler radar at Eglin AFB, Florida.
Quote:
Winds continue to increase along the Florida Panhandle.

An observing site near Tyndall Airforce Base, near Panama City, measured a wind gust to 130 mph Wednesday afternoon and a wind gust to 106 mph was reported at Port St. Joe early. Apalachicola Regional Airport measured sustained winds of 63 mph with a gust to 89 mph midday Wednesday and Saint George island recorded a wind gust of 70 mph Wednesday morning.
Quote:
A storm surge warning is in effect from the Okaloosa/Walton County line in Florida to Anclote River, Florida. This means that life-threatening storm surge inundation will occur in the warning area and be highest during landfall Wednesday.
Quote:
Storm surge watches are in effect from Anclote River, Florida, to Anna Maria Island, Florida, including Tampa Bay. This means life-threatening storm surge inundation is possible in the watch area.
Quote:
A storm surge watch has also been issued for portions of North Carolina from Ocracoke Inlet to Duck.

My son is currently stationed as Tyndall AFB. The Hurricane came ashore about 5 miles south of the house he and my daughter in law, live in. Fortunately, they evacuated to New Orleans Monday night when the Wing Commander issued an evacuation order for the base.

After watching live coverage this afternoon, it looks like the biggest fear (storm surge) did not come to pass where he lives. However, he is yet to find out how much, if any, wind and rain damage he may have experienced. Probably won't find out for a couple of days.
