Default Update; Pacific Oceans Trash Pile

Some think this will work.. I wish them the best... 'Get it done' as the saying goes..

A project to remove 88,000 tons of plastic from the Pacific has begun
A giant "pool noodle" is heading 260 miles offshore for a two week trial.

Steve Dent, @stevetdent - 09.11.18 in Green.

An ambitious project to clean up the 88,000 tons of plastic floating in the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" has begun. On Sunday, the Ocean Cleanup Project started towing its "Ocean Cleanup System 001" from San Francisco to a trial site some 240 nautical miles (260 miles) away.

Once it arrives, the wind and waves will push System 001 into a U-shape and it will slowly drift along on its own. A 10-foot long skirt hanging below will collect pieces of plastic as small as a millimeter in size, and smaller boats will later scoop them up and take them to shore for recycling.

During the two week trial, the system will be "extensively monitored" to make sure it does the job while not harming plankton and other critical marine life. "We want to catch plastic, not fish....

Lurpy. Do you have any idea how much of this trash is recyclable, and what the plan is for the rest?

Jimbo I doubt any researcher has any either.. I can't seem to locate any data done on recyclables among the great plastic ocean patch..

Best I can come up with is they plan on attacking it all and removing it from the ocean, from there ? some into landfills I guess.

We need to get past starting on many needs. Yet as I see it if states along our coasts stop any ocean dumping of trash. Would do much right away..

And getting all UN Countries to do the same if not doing it already..

That's the impression I have. Seems like a plan not thoroughly thought out.

Salty's correct. Walk into any store and there is more packaging than product. Seems like this plan, which is not exactly new BTW, is addressing the problem from the wrong end.

When I was 7 or 8, Mrs' Klug's neighborhood store sold licorice sticks out of a recycled gallon pickle jar. 2 cents each. You reached in, grabbed 5 if you had a dime, stuck them in your pocket. Today they come individually wrapped, then blister packed, then put in a plastic bag at POS.

We must stop turning elements into non degradeable throwaways. Gathering trash from the ocean and stacking it on the beach is at best a very temporary solution.

I would hope these people have given thought and do have a long range plan as stated..

I guess we have to have hope it works. Doing nothing isn't wise either. Yet enough researcher involved there will be answers over time.. Again I hope.

I hope so too.

I ran the numbers through my head a few days ago and it seems that their most optimistic calculation was a few million tons short of being able to keep up with what is deposited annually. At that rate it will not be melting glaciers causing the oceans to rise.

I agree it is becoming overwhelming. So if coastal states, nations stop with ocean dumping of trash along with any other working ideas has to become the norm.
