My ex-father-in-law was a nuclear engineer, by trade, not education, because when he got his degree in engineering there was no such thing as nuclear engineering. He always said that in the grand scheme of things, nuclear power was the cleanest and most efficient power available. Fair to say he is biased since he worked in the industry.
He's also always been left of center.

I've never understood how anyone can claim that nuclear power is clean. It isn't. There is nothing clean about radioactive materials as those living near Chernobyl and Fukushima learned.

Perhaps "clean" isn't the best word, but rather "cleanest" as in it's cleaner than the alternatives.
The radioactive materials can be managed when there isn't a catastrophe.

As for damaging, the worst disasters are not nuclear.

Regarding Chernobyl, its disaster can be primarily categorized as bad design and bad operator action.

Lumara, not "clean", "cleanest".
He (my father-in-law) was comparing it to the amount of energy produced vs the amount of waste or harmful by-products. Even solar and wind have many harmful by-products, most from the creation of batteries to store energy and in the case of solar, the amount of chemicals used to create solar cells. There really is no such thing as "green" or "clean" energy.

Chernobyl is an interesting study in nuclear fallout from a power plant. It happened in April 1986, over 30 years ago. Did you know that there are still people living in the evacuation zones that refused to leave? Still alive, farming and raising livestock. Wild life and plant life is thriving. Wolves, deer, horses, foxes, hogs, domesticated dogs, and other animals have taken over what people abandoned.
I'm not saying that radiation isn't harmful, merely pointing out that in Chernobyl it isn't the death sentence that we are led to believe. Two links for further reading if you are interested.
