It Didn't Take Long for China to Fill America's Shoes on Climate Change

Just a week after President Trump announced his decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, China has already wrestled the mantle of leadership on climate change from the United States. In a high-level meeting of energy ministers in Beijing this week, China played the convening role in bringing together countries from across the globe for a discussion on how to deploy clean energy. The meeting had been scheduled long before Trump's decision on the Paris Agreement, but the timing sent a clear message about who will lead the fight to address climate change in the coming years. During the four-day meeting, China launched a number of initiatives to advance clean energy and announced partnerships with other governments around the globe to fight climate change. "I didnt come to Washington, I came to Beijing," said California Governor Jerry Brown after announcing a joint clean energy effort with Chinese leadership, according to a New York Times report. "Well, someday Im going to go to Washington, but not this week.

The annual clean energy meetings originally began in the early days of the Obama presidency under the leadership of then-Energy Secretary Steven Chu, who hosted the first meeting in Washington, D.C. The goal was to create a forum for collaboration on clean energy apart from the annual meetings on climate change that had been occurring since the 1990s. But at this year's meeting, Energy Secretary Rick Perry played a marginalized role, primarily promoting natural gas, nuclear energy and technology to capture carbon dioxide from fossil fuel emissions. Perry said the U.S. would continue to lead on clean energy, but he also challenged China to step up as the country has said it will. "I hope China will step in and attempt to take the mantle away," Perry said, according to an Associated Press report. "It would be a good challenge for them."

China, the world's largest emitter of climate change-causing carbon dioxide, had displayed its ambition to do just that even before Trump's election last fall. The country has committed to reaching its peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, and shrinking emissions after that, even while continuing to grow its economy and many analysts expect the country to reach that point even earlier. Officials said in January that China would invest more than $350 billion in domestic renewable power generation by 2020. The country will also expand a cap-and-trade program to stretch across the entire country later this year after operating it at a provincial level. As Premier Li Keqiang said after Trump announced his plan to withdraw from the climate deal, "China will stand by its responsibilities on climate change."
Politics and Mother Earth abhors a leadership vacuum.

As long as China is using their money and not ours, they can have at it.

As noted in the article, China is the largest producer if greenhouse gasses.

China being the leader of the war on greenhouse gasses is similar to the Muslim countries being the leaders in women's rights. Both lefty beliefs.

There's an old saying that "figures never lie but liars figure" and that's applicable to the Republican arguments.

Quote:
Speaking about carbon emissions, Trump called China and India the “world’s leading polluters” and the U.S. the “world’s leader in environmental protection.” That’s not entirely accurate.

China and the U.S. were the top emitters per kiloton in 2015. In fact, Americans emitted more than twice as much as the Chinese and over eight times as much as Indians per capita in 2015.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...ent/102399674/

Republicans also ignore the simple fact that when it comes to the accumulation of manmade excess CO2 in the atmosphere that's causing global warming today the US dwarfs China historically.

Since 1962 the US has produced 2,962 million tons of CO2 while China has only produced 440 million tons of CO2.
Carbon dioxide emissions by country over time: The worst global warming polluters (MAP).

The question is "Who are the damn fools?" The ones that recognize that the US has been the major contributor to the increase in excess CO2 in the atmosphere that's causing global warming, that the US produces far more CO2 per capita than China and India combined, that the US has abandoned world political leadership on climate change, that the US has abandoned economic leadership on climate change technology, and, perhaps most important of all, the simple fact that "No One Has a Right to Pollute" or those that ignore all of these facts.

Perhaps Republicans are too stupid recognize that they're Koch brothers' minions.

China will lead the charge against global pollution, and PeeWee Herman will singlehandedly defeat ISIS with his bicycle.

What most just don't yet understand is China is maneuvering to try to take the lead roll in the world while still setting herself up to take control if that world leadership roll doesn't pan out..

Look to the S. China Sea and China man made Islands. This area of oceans is the most economical traveled water way of any. And these surface to ship/surface to air missiles China has set up on a few Islands can control the entire area.

China wants to lead one way or the other...

And I don't want to hear all the patriotic crap as we are not preparing like China or other commie countries are.. Once again America is falling behind as it has far to many tasks competing for money...

Your just another if the clan of idiots, sorry. We don't give a fuq about CO2 in 1962.

Historically China was a backwater, undeveloped and of little consequence, in the post modern world. To compare them back to 1962 is utter bullsh1t, smoke and mirrors designed to denigrate our country, and it place in this today.

Only a fool would go back to 1962 to make any comparison.

And China should be looking out for its own interests. So should we.

They do. We don't.
