Default Honey Nut Cheerios Removes Mascot to Spotlight Declining Bee Population

Quote:
The small, cheerful mascot for Honey Nut Cheerios has temporarily disappeared from packaging and ads for the cereal in in Canada, an effort to raise awareness about declining bee populations.

As part of the new “Bring Back the Bees” ad campaign, which launched Monday, General Mills has asked people to help plant 35 million wildflowers, one for every person in Canada, Ad Week reported.

Honey bee colonies have faced threats to survival worldwide, in part because of new parasites and pesticides, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Quote:
“This is the first time in the brand’s history that we’ve taken ‘Buzz’ off the box,” said Emma Eriksson, director of Marketing for General Mills Canada, according to Ad Week.

She said the unstable bee population is significant because of how many foods are made possible by pollination. Eriksson said the company wanted to use the cereal packaging to draw attention to the problem.

So taking the bee off the box is to "raise awareness of bee's"???

One of the stupidest things I heard a company do in a very long time.

Logic is not substitutable for idiocy in that company...

Agreed. The best message would be for the bee (sorry) to begin making public awareness spots. That would do much more to educated folks. especially youngsters.

Methinks the Icon has become a little thread bare and General Mills wants anew ad concept. This is likely a dodge.

Poor little bee as a following.

I suspect G Mills is worried about the Chinese honey scandal and the bee is just part of that. First they exported honey that was fake. And secondly because China has killed so many pollinators with the industrialization of agriculture that they must do it manually.

So much for wise government choices.

Good topic salty...

What some don't see is the fact you and most likely so many others knowing they removed the bee from the Cheerios box have drawn attention to the plight of natures bee population and the fact a important part of our gather food stores is being interrupted.

Our property must be some type of honey bee resort. They are everywhere. No killer bees are apparent. We have dozens of fire ant mounds that keep the scouts away, I guess.

Finally — some good news for the bees of Hawaii.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has given endangered status to seven species of yellow-faced bees native to the islands. These are "the first bees in the country to be protected under the Endangered Species Act," according to the Xerces Society, which advocated for the new designation.

more than likely what are called wood bees. they are pollinators tho not as good as honey bees. also try not to harm yellow jackets, hornets or wasps unless they are in a place you can't avoid. worst comes to worst these three can do a bit of pollinating.
