Study: Environmentalists Have ‘Substantially Worse than Average’ Carbon Footprints

Hypocrisy...

Do as I say and not as I do...

In the real world, we call it "Standard Operating Procedure"...:yes :rolls

Study: Environmentalists Have ‘Substantially Worse than Average’ Carbon Footprints

Quote:

People who are worried about climate change emit far more carbon dioxide in their daily lives than the average American, according to data gathered by a new app that can track one’s carbon footprint.

Ian Monroe, the chief executive of Oroeco, told Grist that his app, which syncs social media data and online shopping habits to estimate users’ daily carbon emissions, reveals environmentalists to be some of the biggest “carbon polluters.”

Quote:

Something that comes as a shock to a lot of our users: The average person who says they care about climate change actually has a substantially worse than average footprint. Generally that’s because they tend to have a bit more money, and they tend to be people who like to think of themselves as multicultural and like to get out and see the world. Which means that they’re flying around a lot, and all that flying generally outweighs any other green lifestyle choices that they’ve made. You have a lot of people who are using reusable bags and water bottles, driving a Prius, maybe eating a bit more of a veggie friendly diet. But then they’re flying to Bali or South Africa or something once a year. They end up having a larger carbon footprint than a conservative guy who drives an SUV in the suburbs of Atlanta but doesn’t fly anywhere.

The study was done using a social media phone app. Not saying they're aren't hypocrites out there, because there are, but that sort of methodology is really iffy.

The logic is sound...

I get that logic, but I find it hard to believe that a plane flight could cancel out everything someone who is doing what they can on a day-to-day basis to lower their footprint, and then some. I understand why it would, but still find it hard to accept. Even some folks who are super-focused on green stuff may not realize how much air pollution a plane trip emits.

Here, this will help.......

Calculate and offset your carbon footprint

With the calculator, a person flying from London to Bali and back has a carbon footprint of 4.44 tons

That same person driving a Jeep Cherokee 10,000 miles a year has a carbon footprint of 4.57 tons.

I'm a criminal but Johnny is worse than me so I should be overlooked?

No, but when the criminal tells me to obey the law, he gets my single digit salute.

Al Gore is the prophet of the AGW movement yet he has a relatively huge carbon footprint. He is the supposed canary in the mine, telling us we are all gonna die. If you ask me, he shows way too much plumage for a common canary, but that's just me.

Just imagine what it would be if they weren't driving eco friendly cars, recycling, buying local, etc, etc. Just because flying somewhere once a year is a "big footprint" doesn't mean that trying to minimize one's footprint is a bad idea.

Besides, I don't see how EACH person on the plane accounts for the carbon footprint of the entire f*cking flight. If it was a single person plane and someone was flying around all the time, sure. But that's not the case.
