MINNEAPOLIS -

A new report says the drought gripping the United States is the widest since 1956, and the effect on the nation's corn and soybean crops is alarming.

Fifty-five per cent of the continental U.S. faces a moderate to extreme drought, according to the monthly State of the Climate drought report released Monday by the National Climactic Data Center.

That's the most since December 1956, when 58 per cent of the country was covered by drought.

This year, 80 per cent of the U.S. is abnormally dry.

The nation's corn and soybean belt has been especially hard hit. The report says crops, pastures and rangeland have deteriorated at an alarming rate.

Meanwhile, Weather Authority Jessica Starr is calling for high temperatures to reach the mid to upper-90s for the beginning of the week in metro Detroit.

So far this month, only one day has topped out with a high temperature that was below average.

We are all looking at very high food costs come this fall. I'm seeing it already in our markets. Corn was selling for 10 ears for 3 dollars at the beginning of the summer. They are now selling 6 ears for 2 dollars.

The pinch is on!

Well I guess few will read this either MrLiberty as they don't want the real news. And that is this drought is world wide. Just few yet know about it... most don't look at the world news, country by country.

And I have already said items at my store (Dillon's) have gone up twice as I know. Cause I usally shop every 4 days on the average.
By late fall we should see a large increase in food and other items as thats how it goes once the greed bug bites..

.Sri Lanka starts three-hour rolling power cuts

AFP – 3 hrs ago. 24 July 2012 ................................

Sri Lanka announced on Tuesday that electricity would be cut to many homes, shops, offices and government buildings for three hours every day due to shortages from hydro-power stations.

The outages will be rotated across different parts of the island and begin at various times throughout the day, the energy ministry said, blaming a drought that has affected reservoirs in the central region.

"We are facing difficulties in balancing the supply and demand," the ministry said in a statement. "The only alternative is to carry out power cuts across the country until further notice."

It said two poor monsoon seasons had caused hydro-electricity generation to drop by 75 percent in the past year and added that shortages had been compounded by a new Chinese-built coal power generator breaking down.

"The main impact of the drought is on hydro-electricity reservoirs," irrigation ministry spokesman Viraj Abeysinghe said, adding that the main agricultural areas were unaffected.

Earlier this month, President Mahinda Rajapakse ordered reservoirs to be cleared of silt to increase capacity.

The state-run Ceylon Electricity Board said they were trying to restore the faulty coal power plant as well as another diesel plant to augment electricity supplies.

They will only know when they see their food bills skyrocketing over the next few months.

Funny about locations corn here is still cheaper. I don't buy it cause of the sugar but we get in 3's and my friend Bob and his wife do buy it. They shop about every day for dinner.

I get a kick out of them around 2:20 PM when she is about ready to get off work, as they each have a hard time making up their minds for dinner.

If I am over there or calling I just say lets eat out. But I haven't been over much as they are getting ready to to return to her country Checzk, if I spelled it correctly.

It is just south of Poland where her grandmother lives. Yep she grew up behind the Iron Curtain.

Man the stories she can tell you about health care... She was a nurse there but here she is the head of the blood department. As here license isn't interchangeable.

And even though she is married to an American citizen she won't apply for citizenship as here country only allows one citizenship.

And in her smaller town they are very progressive in many ways. Outside the city where her family lives they have all kinds of animals, a big garden and grow their own pot. Which is legal over there.

If the worst did happen they would get through it quite well off. Unless Putin were to bring back the old ways.
