While there's no doubt that there was a lot of litter around, I can pretty much guarantee you that this particular pile was the wosrt of it. Look at the trash in the background and you'll see some scattered about, but nothing like the pile in the foreground. A lot of times, a camera angle can be VERY deceptive. In this case, the picture seems to have been taken to maximize the impression of a massive amount of trash. My guess is that this spot was the worst of a bad situation and the photographer did his/her best to maximize it's impact.

It looks like they've collected and piled all the trash in one spot and that is the spot the photographer chose as "representative".

There's no doubt that there was some serious trash spread around, but the pic used isn't representative of the whole. The fact is that even if that pic showed all the trash in the park (which it doesn't), it's still an egregious violation of this park's rules and basic courtesy. The Earth Day party pics from Delores Park were almost as bad, so my guess is that people jsut don't give a rat's ass in SF. Talk the talk, but the minute it comes to walking the walk, suddenly it's all about not having to deal with their own trash. In my neck of the woods, if someone had left behind a pile of trash like that, somone would have gathered it up, followed them home and returned their belongings to them by dropping them off in their front yard.

Sadly they don't do that where I live I'm forever picking up stuff when I walk along the roadside

There are partiers and there are people who care about the Earth - they aren't necessarily the same.

On any given day you can find stuff like this in any number of Detroits neighborhoods.

A couple of years ago me and a friend drove through the neighborhood where we went to high school. Many of the houses were burnt out shells and the grounds looked like someone took about twenty trash cans and just dumped them all over. I could not believe that was the same neighborhood I went to school in.....

Yes. We call the phenomenon "hurricane season." You can watch the eyes roll all over the Pacific and the Atlantic and sometimes major population centers. That last, though, is really how Mother Nature makes a deep sigh.
