Default Battery-powered autos proving a tough sell

Washington— Electric vehicle sales have been slow out of the box, despite marketing hype, government incentives and the hopes of green car advocates.

Total sales last year were 17,425, which is less than 0.1 percent of the U.S. car and light truck market.

Ford Motor Co. sold about 12 Focus Electrics in December and January to fleet customers — and none in February and March, said Erich Merkle, a Ford spokesman. The Dearborn automaker plans a slow ramp-up as it begins production this spring for retail sales; the New York area and California are the first markets.

You would think with gas prices as high as they are more people would be buying electric vehicles. However, that is not the case. Most people realize that these cars do not fill most families need.

Until these cars get an adequate range per charge and the cost of replacing the batteries comes way down I don't expect the electric car will sell more than a few thousand units a year.

If you put a massive marketing platform in play only to get 0.1% of the market, you'd be fired on the spot...

Yes, fuel costs are high, but electric car costs are even higher. I looked into getting a hybrid and after crunching the numbers realized I'd be spending quite a bit more money if I did.

I drove a prius rental out of town the last couple of days (not by my choice). The FOB keys failed a couple of tmes and it wasn't really fun to drive. Flippin' stop beeping when I put it in reverse. Annoying.

Yet I would add one other thing, the price is way to high right now. As rivrrat has pointed out.
