Just another of many volcanos to erupt, even the dormant ones, which there are plenty of. One thing science has learned over time is when there is increased seismic activity that marks the start (possibly) as not every one does blow with the first signs.

Like what lies beneath Yellowstone National Park, which has for years now been very seismic active for many years now.

.Volcano erupts with ash cloud in New Zealand park

By NICK PERRY | Associated Press – 6 hrs ago. 7 August 2012 .........

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A volcano quiet for more than a century erupted in a New Zealand national park, spreading thick ash for several kilometers (miles) and causing some residents to evacuate their homes. Some domestic flights were canceled Tuesday.

Mount Tongariro spewed ash and rocks for about 30 minutes late Monday night after a few weeks of increased seismic activity. It didn't cause any injuries or damage in the sparsely populated central North Island region. Tongariro National Park has three active volcanos, is a popular tourist destination and was the backdrop for many scenes in the "Lord of the Rings" movies.

Some residents left their homes as a precaution, and authorities temporarily closed roads. National carrier Air New Zealand canceled or delayed domestic flights to towns near the mountain, though by Tuesday afternoon, it said it was resuming service to locations where the ash cloud had cleared. No international flights were affected.

Police said a witness to the eruption described flashes and explosions followed by a cloud of ash coming from a hole in the north face of the mountain. The Department of Conservation said three hikers were staying in a hut on the opposite slope of Mount Tongariro when it erupted but they walked out of the area safely.

Steve Sherburn, a volcanologist at the government agency GNS Science, said the eruption spread a layer of ash several centimeters (one or two inches) thick for several kilometers (miles). He said he'd heard reports of ash traveling on wind currents to coastal towns 100 kilometers (60 miles) away. He said the eruption was likely caused by steam pressure building within the mountain.

Nine dead as flood ravages Manila

Big News Network.comTuesday 7th August, Posted 8 August 2012 ...........

MANILA - Philippines Torrential rain caused flooding that submerged half of the Philippine capital, triggered a landslide that killed nine people and has forced thousands to flee their homes.

The deluge, the worst since 2009 when hundreds died in flash floods, was set off by the seasonal monsoon that overflowed major dams and rivers in Manila and surrounding provinces.

The flooding was neck-deep in some areas and forced closure of schools, offices and the stock exchange.

Nine members of one family died after a landslide hit shanty houses in Quezon City, a government report said.

Last week, the capital and other parts of the country were battered by Typhoon Saola, which left in its wake at least 53 deaths.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, in a statement, said that widespread flooding has been reported in the capital and the surrounding provinces.

"It's like a water world," said Benito Ramos, head of the government's disaster response agency. The rains flooded half of metropolitan Manila on Monday evening, and about 30 percent remained under waist- or neck-deep waters Tuesday.

He urged residents in areas prone to landslides and floods to stay in evacuation centers.

Manila's weather bureau said the rains were forecast to last until Thursday.

.Residents describe terror of Iran quake, 250 die

By ALI AKBAR DAREINI | Associated Press – 34 mins ago. 12 Aug. 2012 .....

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Residents of the zone in northwestern Iran hit by powerful twin earthquakes described moments of terror and panic with birds crowing loudly in warning seconds before the ground shook. As the death toll rose Sunday to more than 250 with entire villages leveled, rescuers called off searches for survivors and turned their attention to caring for the 16,000 people left homeless.

At least 20 villages were totally destroyed in the quakes on Saturday that were followed by some 36 aftershocks, state television reported. Ahmad Reza Shajiei, a senior government official in charge of rescue operations, said more than 5,000 tents have been set up to shelter the thousands of displaced who spent the night outdoors.

"The moment the earthquake hit, it was like a snake biting from underground. It was the worst experience of my life," said resident Morteza Javid, 47, from Ahar.

"The walls were shaking and moving from side to side. It took about a minute before I could run out of the house," he said. "Seconds before the earthquake, crows were making a lot of noise, but I didn't understand why. It was only after the quake that I learned the crows were warning us." Javid said he drove more than a dozen injured people to hospitals during the night.

State television said at least 250 died. The semiofficial Mehr news agency quoted a local official who put the toll at 277. State TV said 44,000 food packages and thousands of blankets have been distributed in the stricken area.

In Washington, the White House press secretary sent a message of sympathy for the victims.

.Disease alert as Philippines flood toll jumps to 85

By Jason Gutierrez | AFP – 1 hr 47 mins ago. 12 August 2012 ...........

Emergency relief officials and doctors deployed to flood devastated communities in the Philippines Sunday to prevent outbreaks of disease as the death toll jumped to 85.

The flooding that submerged 80 percent of Manila early in the week has largely subsided but more than 150 towns and cities around the capital remain under water, affecting more than three million people.

Amid the ongoing relief operation, the weather bureau warned of a low pressure area developing some 850 kilometres (528 miles) to the east in the Pacific Ocean that could turn into a storm and bring more rain.

Many provinces around Manila remained inundated as overflowing dams continued to release water, the national disaster coordinating agency said.

Relief workers were dealing with "clogged pipelines and trash everywhere. Sanitation has emerged as a key problem," Red Cross secretary general Gwendolyn Pang told AFP.
........................................... SKIPPED SOME .............................................

n all, more than three million people in 167 towns and 16 cities were affected by the heavy rains and floods, the disaster agency said.

"Many have returned to their homes as the waters subsided, but it is far from a normal situation," Ramos said.

"We are trying to help them return to their normal lives with a massive clean-up operation. There is muck everywhere, and it would take some time."

Ramos said the death toll rose to 85 on Sunday from 66 the previous day, with most of the casualties due to drowning.

The floods were caused by seasonal southwest monsoon that brought an unusual amount of rainfall over Manila and nearby areas, causing dams and river systems to overflow.

If the new low pressure disturbance develops into a major storm, it would bring more misery, Ramos warned.

.Strong quake jolts western China

AFP – 7 hrs ago. 12 August 2012 ..............

A shallow 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook a remote area of China's western region of Xinjiang, near the border with Tibet, on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said.

It was not immediately clear if there was any damage or casualties and rescue teams had been rushed to the mountainous quake zone to assess the situation, a local official told AFP.

The quake's epicentre, at a depth of nine kilometres (5.6 miles), was about 280 kilometres east of Hotan town, USGS said. It struck at 6:45 pm (1045 GMT).

The China Earthquake Networks Centre measured it at 6.2-magnitude and put it at a deeper 30 kilometres, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

"A rescue team and other officials are now on the way to the earthquake zone, which is in a mountainous area," an official with the emergency office of Yutian county -- also known as Keriya -- told AFP.

"As of now, we haven't received any news."

The county is on the southern edge of China's vast Taklimakan desert.

On Saturday, a quake measuring 5.3 hit Xinjiang, about 188 km from the town of Shache, according to the USGS.

Xinjiang is a vast region with a population of around 20 million, of whom some nine million are Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking, mainly Muslim ethnic minority.

.New storm threatens flood-hit Philippines

By Mynardo Macaraig | AFP – 1 hr 32 mins ago. 13 August 2012 ......

Philippine authorities warned Monday an intensifying storm could bring more misery to the flood-battered capital and surrounding areas, where nearly half a million were in evacuation centres.

While flooding that covered 80 percent of Manila last week had largely subsided, vast areas of mainly rice-growing provinces to the north were still under water that in some places remained neck-deep.

Most of the 411,000 people crammed into gymnasiums, schools and other government evacuation centres were in the flooded farming provinces, with many others struggling by living in partly submerged homes.

"These are the people we are most worried about," civil defence chief Benito Ramos told AFP.

"We have not yet fully recovered and here comes another storm."

Two weeks of relentless monsoon rains peaked early last week with about two days of torrential rain across the main island of Luzon, claiming at least 92 lives and affecting more than 3.4 million people, according to the government.

Manila, a megacity of about 15 million people, endured its worst flooding since 2009, while farmers to the north said they had not experienced waters reaching such levels for decades.

.Typhoon Kai-Tak kills nine in Vietnam

AFP – 9 hrs ago. 19 August 2012 .............................

At least nine people were killed, thousands of homes damaged and swathes of farmland flooded as Typhoon Kai-Tak swept across northern Vietnam, authorities said Sunday.

The storm, which made landfall late Friday, brought strong winds and heavy rains that inundated several densely populated communities including part of the capital Hanoi.

Five people were swept away by floodwaters while one woman died when a landslide buried her house while she was sleeping in Bac Giang province, according to the government's central committee on flood and storm control.

A taxi driver was killed by a toppled tree while two people were electrocuted by a falling electricity cable, it said.

Nearly 12,000 houses were damaged and 23,000 hectares (56,800 acres) of cropland were flooded, according to the committee.

In Hanoi, about 200 large trees were uprooted and part of the city remained under water early Sunday.

The Vietnamese army had put 20,000 soldiers backed by helicopters, rescue boats and canoes on standby for rescue operations, but only a small number of them were deployed.

More than 11,000 boats, including several hundred used by tourists at the UNESCO world heritage site Halong Bay, were ordered to stay close to the shore.

The storm, which earlier killed four people in the Philippines, was packing winds of about 100 kilometres (62 miles) per hour when it slammed into Vietnam, but it was downgraded to a tropical depression on Saturday.

Chinese state media, quoting official figures, said the typhoon, which hit China before smashing into Vietnam, had left two people dead and two missing in the south, forcing 530,000 to be relocated.

.Typhoon brings flashfloods, landslides to Philippines

AFP – 1 hr 37 mins ago. 20 August 2012 .....................

Typhoon Tembin brought heavy rains to the northern Philippines on Monday, triggering landslides and flashfloods just weeks after a series of deadly storms and monsoon rains, the government said.

The storm, which was upgraded from a tropical storm, was moving slowly northwards off the northern tip of the main Philippine island of Luzon while battering the mountainous region with powerful downpours.

The heavy rain caused landslides that damaged eight major highways, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a statement.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Tembin, packing maximum winds of 130 kilometres (681 miles) per hour with gusts of up to 160 kph, was expected to remain off the northern tip of Luzon for more than a day, the council added.

Local communities were warned to monitor the levels of rivers and streams in their area and prepare for evacuations in case they begin to rise.

Storms and flooding from torrential rains have left at least 170 people dead this month.

An average of 20 tropical storms or typhoons hit the Philippines each year.
