Being prepared changes things for the better.. A bigger quake and less lost of life.

.Five died in massive Indonesian quake: officials

AFP – 3 hrs ago. 12 April 2012

Five people died and at least seven were injured as massive earthquakes struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island, officials said Thursday.

Officials said they believed at least two people died of heart attacks and three others died of shock in the quakes on Wednesday.

"Based on data collected on victims and damage, five people died, one person is critically injured and six others had minor injuries," National Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

An 8.6-magnitude quake struck 431 kilometres (268 miles) off the city of Banda Aceh late afternoon Wednesday, and was followed by another undersea quake measured at 8.2, with aftershocks continuing through the night.

All of the casualties were in Aceh province, Nugroho said, with the critically injured victim a child who fell from a tree.

Communities in Aceh have now returned to daily life, Nugroho added, in stark contrast to the devastation caused by the massive 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which killed 170,000 people in the province alone and wiped out entire towns.

Minimal damage was caused this time round because government regulations ensured buildings have better resistance to quakes, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and people were better prepared.

..Strong earthquake hits western Indonesia, no tsunami threat

By The Associated Press | Associated Press – 5 hrs ago...

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia - Officials say a strong earthquake measuring magnitude 6.2 has struck off the coast of western Indonesia but there is no danger of a tsunami.

The U.S. Geological Survey says Sunday's quake was centred about 400 miles (650 kilometres) southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, at a depth of 9 miles (15 kilometres).

Indonesian meteorological official Suharjono says there is no threat of a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Two powerful quakes measuring magnitude 8.6 and 8.2 triggered a tsunami watch on Wednesday in more than two dozen nations and island territories, from Australia and India to as far off as Africa.

More than 100 tornadoes reported across Midwest

Posted: April 15, 2012 - 7:49am

By The Associated Press

WOODWARD, Okla. — Bleary-eyed residents were scouring through damaged homes across the Midwest on Sunday after a violent storm system unleashed dozens of overnight tornadoes, killing at least five people in Oklahoma, leveling homes in Iowa and Kansas, and cutting power to hundreds of thousands.

More than 100 tornadoes had been reported across the region by daybreak, according to the National Weather Service. Although the storm system was weakening as it crawled into Arkansas and Missouri and additional tornadoes were unlikely, forecasters warned that strong thunderstorms were expected as far east as Michigan.

Five people were killed and more than two dozen were injured when a suspected tornado ripped through a mobile home park in Woodward, Okla., about 140 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. Streets in the 12,000-resident town were left dotted with mangled vehicles, toppled power lines and leveled buildings.

Retired firefighter Marty Logan said he spotted the tornado when it knocked down power lines, causing flashes of light, and saw a radio tower’s blinking lights go black shortly after midnight. He later saw a man emerge from a twisted, wrecked sport utility vehicle that had been tossed along the side of the road.

“The guy had blood coming down his face,” Logan said, adding that he saw people walking down the street covered in blood when he went to a hard-hit neighborhood. “It was scary, because I knew it was after midnight and a lot of people were in bed.”

Search teams were scouring rubble for trapped and injured as the sun came up.

“They’re still going door to door and in some cases, there are piles of rubble and they are having to sift through the rubble,” said Michelann Ooten, an Oklahoma emergency management official.

Numerous tornadoes were reported in Kansas, though mostly in rural parts of the western and central sections of the state. A reported tornado in Wichita that struck late Saturday night caused damage at McConnell Air Force Base and the Spirit AeroSystems and Boeing plants. A mobile home park was heavily damaged in the city, although no injuries or deaths were reported.

The county where Wichita is located was declared a state of disaster and said preliminary estimates suggest damages could be as high as $283 million.

This goes with the last Indonesia quake. 4 posts above this one.

.Recent Indonesia quake added pressure to key fault

By ROBIN McDOWELL | Associated Press – 12 hrs ago. 19 April 2012

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Seismologists say last week's powerful earthquake off western Indonesia increased pressure on the source of the devastating 2004 tsunami: a fault that could unleash another monster wave sometime in the next few decades.

"The spring was pushed a little bit tighter," said Kerry Sieh, director of the Earth Observatory of Singapore.

The timing of another megathrust temblor, if it's on the way, "could have been advanced by a few years," he said.

Last week's 8.6-magnitude earthquake also showed that tsunami-ravaged Aceh province, close to the epicenter, remains unprepared for the next Big One. Though the quake caused little damage, the country's disaster-management chief acknowledged that evacuation efforts were "a big mess."

Indonesia, located on the "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin, has unleashed some of the deadliest seismic events of the past century. But the 9.1-magnitude quake that struck in 2004, triggering a 100-foot-high tsunami and killing 230,000 people, caught scientists off guard because its fault, west of Sumatra island, had long been quiet.

Since then scientists have conducted a flurry of research, looking at tsunami sand deposits, uplifted coral and GPS data. By observing past patterns of quakes, which tend to be cyclical, they better understand what might happen next, though it's impossible to make predictions with any certainty.

The two last behemoth quakes occurred around 1393 and 1450, and Sieh said the 2004 earthquake may be just the first part of a similar couplet.

It is smoking and tossing out ash but has yet to explode. Pictures right under the title.

.Mexico volcano spews glowing rock, tower of ash

By MARK STEVENSON | Associated Press – 8 mins ago. 20 April 2012

XALITZINTLA, Mexico (AP) — A 17,886-foot (5,450-meter) volcano outside Mexico City exhaled dozens of towering plumes of ash and shot fragments of glowing rock down its slopes Friday morning, frightening the residents of surrounding villages with hours of low-pitched roaring not heard in a decade.

A roiling white cloud of ash, gas, water vapor and superheated rock spewed from the cone of Popocatepetl high above the village of Xalitzintla, whose residents said they were awakened by a window-rattling series of eruptions. Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center said that a string of eruptions had ended in the early morning, then started up again at 5:05 a.m., with at least 12 in two hours.

"Up on the mountain, it feels incredible," said Aaron Sanchez Ocelotl, 45, who was in his turf grass fields when the eruptions happened. "It sounds like the roaring of the sea."

The white cone of Popo, as most call the mountain, is an iconic backdrop to Mexico City's skyline on clear days, but its 40 miles (65 kilometers) distance means even a moderately large eruption is unlikely to do more than dump ash on one of the world's largest metropolitan areas. It's a different matter for the villages on the flanks of the volcano, where the quiet of the corn fields and fruit orchards was pervaded by the volcano's spooky roaring.

............................................ CONTINUED .................................................

Dozens of women lined up in Xalitzintla's main square to get free face masks and bottles of water. Health authorities were giving out 10 masks and 10 bottles of water to each family, and the surgical-style masks, intended to filter out the fine ash released by the volcano, were becoming common among the town*s students, who are required to wear them in school. Few adults wore them.

"Right now we're not scared. When it's scary is at night, when it's putting out lava," said Nancy Agustin Inclan, 14, as she removed her mask and took a break outside the gate of the town's middle school.

President Felipe Calderon said live on national television that authorities are keeping open roads around the mountain, preparing emergency shelters and making sure residents know the latest information about a potential eruption.

If I recall correctly Mexico City or part of it is built on an old dry lake bed.

I had heard it a long while ago. So I am to.

Southern CA. gets a wake up earthquake call.

..Moderate earthquake shakes Southern California

By CHRISTOPHER WEBER | Associated Press – 1 hr 13 mins ago...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Some Southern Californians were shaken out of bed Saturday morning by a small earthquake that rattled homes across the Inland Empire region and caused buildings to sway in downtown Los Angeles.

The magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck at 8:07 a.m. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was centered about two miles northwest of Devore, in San Bernardino County. The quake was downgraded from an initial magnitude of 4.1.

"It felt like a sonic boom," said Letty Salgado, a server at Papa Tony's Diner in San Bernardino. "Everybody was startled. Customers all looked at each other, then went right back to their breakfasts. It was real quick."

A San Bernardino County Sheriff's dispatcher in nearby Rancho Cucamonga said the station shook for a few seconds, but there were no calls about damage or injuries.

A small 2.0 magnitude aftershock hit about a half-mile away about two minutes later, the USGS said. That was followed by a 1.8 magnitude shock at 8:14 a.m.

Well again Indonesia has been (at sea) hit by another quake. If you use the map for the last week you will see this in blue and plenty in yellow. Many never make the International news.

Quake sways tall buildings in Indonesia's capital

Associated Press – 3 hrs ago... 4 June 2012 .........................

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A strong earthquake swayed tall buildings in Indonesia's capital Monday afternoon but caused no tsunami or apparent damage.

Office workers said the swaying was felt for about 10 seconds in high-rise buildings around the city of 9 million people. Even two-story homes shook strongly.

No damage or casualties have been reported. Earthquakes occur frequently across the sprawling archipelago nation, but it is uncommon for tremors to be felt in Jakarta.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 5.9-magnitude quake hit in the Indian Ocean 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Sukabumi, a town in West Java province. It was about 171 kilometers (106 miles) from Jakarta and 67 kilometers (41 miles) beneath the ocean floor.

Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency had the magnitude at 6.1. Slight discrepancies are common in the initial measurements.

Indonesia is located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and seismic faults encircling the Pacific Basin.

A giant 9.1-magnitude quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, half of them in Indonesia's westernmost province of Aceh.
