I find it interesting when articles like this are posted.
Often, the comment that is put with it (and I am NOT speaking of you Mr. Collins) is that gay people should not complain because they have it better in the US than we would in other countries. It is true that gay folks DO have it better here than in places like Iran, but this does not mean that any American citizen should feel onbligated to settling for second best when it comes to rights. Just sayin... As a note... From reading the article I would guess that the "woman" that was executed for becoming pregnant with her brother's child was the 13 year old girl that was listed in the list of victims. Needless to say, she probably wasn't given a lot of choice in whether or not to sleep with her brother! |

In a reversal of policy, the United States on Monday backed an Iranian initiative to deny United Nations consultative status to organizations working to protect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. In a letter to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, a coalition of 40 organizations, led by the Human Rights Campaign, Human Rights Watch, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, called for an explanation of the vote which aligned the United States with governments that have long repressed the rights of sexual minorities.
United Nations: U.S. Aligned With Iran in Anti-Gay Vote (Human Rights Watch, 25-1-2006) It looks like the U.S. was backing an Iranian initiative to help ensure the UN doesn't speak out against governments that oppress homosexuals. So the U.S. has already backed an IRANian initiative to keep countries quiet (via the UN) on gay rights issues. So it's not limited to an issue of "moral authority", but rather just a general "shut up" as other countries oppress gays... Last edited by foundit66; 11-13-2007 at 08:42 PM. |
