Is this guy serious? Harvey Milk was MURDERED while carrying out his duties as a PUBLIC SERVANT. If we can honor any public servant who has been murdered in the line of duty, then why not Milk? This might be getting too personal, but I had to find out about Harvey Milk on my own much later in life. Had I known about Harvey Milk earlier in my life, it might have helped reduce the number of wasted years being filled with issues about my sexuality. Milk's story is one of dedication. Milk is the GLBT King. Why do we need things like this for 'minority' populations? Because they are minority. Everyday is a focus on the majority, majority rule, majority wants, majority bigotry. One day, just one day set aside to reflect on the achievements and contributions of one Harvey Milk isn't too much to ask. Not for the legacy of Harvey Milk, but for all those kids out there like me that are searching for a hero to identify with.

However I don't believe we need things like this for minority populations. I'm clearly a minority but you don't see me asking for a holiday. They don't have clear role models for agnostic socially liberal yet fiscally conservative brown-skinned single custodial fathers, and quite frankly I don't see you supporting a holiday for folks like me any time soon. As a minority, I can clearly say that I don't need things like state holidays to validate me.

Having done some research I'm overwhelmingly in favor of this bill and would be quite dissappointed were the Governor to veto it. No state holiday and a good history/civil rights excuse for public schools. In fact I'd suggest they designate a certain grade level where his life is studied ... say 8th grade or so??? I could understand why it might be a bit weighty for younger children... Now, after all that I still say that we don't need things like this simply it represents a minority group. I think we as a nation need to recognize those that fight hard for and make huge strides in our country historically. Milk is one of those people and I do believe we as a people are better off for his courageous acts. Things have changed so dramatically since the late 70's that many people don't remember how difficult things were for the gay community and thus tend to not recognize the pioneers of the recent past.
